Hi there. My dad's dying so I had put my job hunting temporarily on hold (since I lost my job a few weeks ago), we've been living off of savings which doesn't satisfy the I-864 requirement. My dad could live a matter of days or he could live a week or he could live a month. The doctors are trying to fight it but dad's basically given up and decided he's dying so we're just not sure how much longer is left. June 21st will be 3 months since my now-husband arrived on his K1... we want the AOS application out before then. I'd like to get back to work, but I'm scared that if I do my dad's health will crash and a week later I'll be watching him die and at a funeral. If I get a full time job meeting 125% of the poverty guidelines for a household of two, and send out the AOS paperwork immediately... and have to quit the job a week later because dad died, and get a new job once my head is back on straight... is that ok? Would that screw anything up with AOS? I'm not going into the job with the intention of quitting a week later it's just that, with the condition dad's in, he could go at any point with little warning... and usually jobs aren't too accommodating to time off only a week after employment starts, heh. I'd rather not trouble my already-fried friends and family with co-sponsorship stuff unless I have to... none of us can really take more than we've already got on our shoulders... so I'd like to work... but if dad goes and I quit only a week after starting work could screw things up with AOS then I may have to investigate the co-sponsor option...

Sorry if that didn't make much sense. I'm not making much sense these days.

Well, you know you can't file AOS without some sort of employment and you do have to meet the 125% poverty level. Not trying to insult your intelligence. :) As long as you two got married during the 90 day window on the K1, which y'all did, you can file AOS at a later date. The fee increase for AOS will take place on July 30, 2007. *sigh* I'm not sure how to advise you as far as the job situation. Maybe if you go for an interview and explain that under normal circumstances you wouldn't have a problem with being in attendance at work, but your father is dying and would have to be able to leave at a moment's notice. I know this is a hard time for you...believe me I know. Been there. Just curious, if you do get a job and let's say a week later your father passes, why would you need to quit? I can't think of why a death in the family would get you dismissed from any job. Just something to think about. :)

Believe me, I know this type situation IS stressful...I watched my Momma die a slooooow death and I was traveling back and forth on weekends and as often during the week as I could to be with her. PM me if you need to unload...you know I don't mind. :) Hugs to ya girl....it's gonna work out, this AOS stuff. (F)

Wow, the fee increase will be that soon... dang. About the jobs, I seem to be a worst-case-scenario-preparer... most people around here... you ask for time off from work a week after you start working and you don't get a good response. My last job only gave, like, a few days for grieving. There's no way I'd be able to return to work a few days after my dad dying. Or what if he dies slowly and for like a week my sister and I need to be there full-time and I can't work or... I don't know. All I know is that I'm going insane. But other than that. I just want to know if, the job I have when filling out the I-864 only lasts a week, it'll be a problem with AOS... or if it won't matter. I might take you up on the offer to talk at some point, since you know what it's like... but right now... I'm so fried...

I am so sorry to hear this!

I don't know everything what happens with you, but I would look for new job, at least to fill papers, you can enplane job change in interview later if they have questions about your affidavit. And also, you never know, you might find very good employer, and if really something happens, i don't know how cool hearted should be your boss, to not allow to take day off for possible funeral. Also take to account, that fees will increase.

I hope things will go good for you

Take care!

Thanks. It's not just the funeral... it's that we're pretty sure we'll have a warning, like things will get extremely bad for at least a day or two and then he'll go. So it'll be time spent with him before he dies, time while planning the funeral to support my family, time for the funeral, time to piece myself back together... anyway... what I'm guessing it'd be no big deal if the job on my I-864 only lasts for a week, if they ask at the AOS interview we just explain the circumstances... but I just wanted to check to make sure I wouldn't screw anything up if that had to happen. I'm not debating if I'll quit my job or not, I can't take it any more than one day at a time at this point... I just want to make sure that IF I do have to my husband's immigration process will still be ok. :)

I think that often times people bring in a new affidavit of support, letter from employer and pay stubs to their interview.... besides the affidavit is filled out with your last 3 years of income from your tax transcripts. I wish you all the best. I work with people dying and know the unpredictability of it all. If you can live off your savings spend all the time you can with your dad now or take a part time job close to him so that you can earn a little money to pay the bills but get to be with your dad as much as possible. My thoughts are with you and your family,

Kristina

I agree Angela.

I'd worry about quitting the job or not later on. You have to be with your dad and your family - and do the AOS thing. Good luck.

Aww, Angie, I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

Your dad is what matters right now. As said above maybe you can get a part time job. And just be honest at interviews, tell them that you really want to work for them but that you're father's health is going down and that you might need some time of at anytime. It's not like you're asking for paid vacations and employeurs are humans.

If they can't understand what you are going through they're not worth working for.

Do what you can. Yes you know that you might not be able to keep your job, but I'm sure there are many people who filed in for AOS and suddenly lost their job and came to the interview with something new. You are trying hard to make this work, your relationship is Bona Fide, I don't see why they would make it harder for you than it already is. If you are honest.

I would think that in the worst case they would say that the green card is pending to you getting a new job (I assume).

Take care and spend time with him, and get your dad to talk with you and tell you everything that you will want to pass on to the next generation and tell him everything you always wanted to tell him.

Take care.
