@Greenbaum I haven't received my RFE yet, but I suspect I know what it is. I believe I missed checkbox 4a.

If indeed this was the mistake, would you recommend submitting that page with ONLY 4a checked (since they have the rest of the page filled out with my initial application)? Or fill out the entire page, ensuring that 4a is checked?

Many thanks for your guidance.

Wait for the RFE and follow their directions without fail. Don't make up anything and don't assume you know what they want. Do only what the RFE requests. Doing more can send you down the rabbit hole and you will not like the outcome.

If you send more than what they ask you for, it means it will take longer to adjudicate. USCIS are pretty specific in what they ask for (in my case too) so we are not sending extra anything. If they ask for one document, you send one document. If you send 10 unnecessary things, they will have to look at it too and it will take more time.

I just finished putting together my response. Is it excessive? Should I include more? I have some pictures from our engagement as well.

Well, shoot. I'm worried now that I included too much. The and/or made it a little unclear, I guess. I figured I would err on the side of being thorough.

Well let's say the RFE asks for A and B. You answer with A and B but you think they should know more information. So, you add more information to the RFE then is asked for. This information now can be used to adjudicate your case. It just might open a can of warms.

Adjudicator's are great at uncovering hidden bits of information based on what the applicant supplies. They are trained to do so. Why would you want to give them more then is asked, thinking that it will help your case when after all if you answer the RFE with A and B end of story. Your application is approved and you are good to go.

Be very careful with "engagement pictures" as they may follow some cultural lines and look like a wedding and then all bets are off because now they think you are married. Don't include any of that in your answer.

Add the evidence that you can but keep it vague. You want to be sure what you are saying doesn't give the impression that you are married now.

Oh, wow. That's crazy. Yeah, there's definitely not anything that would indicate we're married or anything to hide about the situation, so it's surprising to me to hear that it's a good idea to be vague. The engagement was his friends holding up a sign that said, "Will you marry me?" he got down on one knee, proposed, I said yes, and then we went out for drinks. Very typical engagement, I would think.

Stop, how could that be a problem?! Omgosh. That's what people do is have a little celebration. Even the culture here is to have engagement parties. What you're describing seems so far from being interpreted as a wedding. Are you kidding me? 😄 Now maybe something in church, like a religious ceremony, even though in other countries priests have nothing to do with getting people married... from a legal standpoint... I can kind of see how that could be perceived as getting married. But to have a little get together to celebrate with friends... Jeeze. I couldn't imagine being suspected of having gotten married. 😲

I think I’m starting to get paranoid that I’m going to accidentally say or do the wrong thing or break some rule I didn’t know about and screw everything up. And everything is on the line with this! I just found out that if my fiancé hangs out my son while I’m at work, there’s a chance that could be considered illegal? I never in a million years would have thought. And for some reason I totally thought working remotely would be ok. I don’t know how many times I’ve worked from my computer while traveling without even considering that I might be breaking some kind of laws doing so! It’s a lot to process. I love having these forums as a resource, but it’s definitely causing a lot of anxiety.

Let's take a deep breath. If you both are a good citizens and have not had problems with the law and you meet all the other requirements then you have nothing to be worry about. I don't know your local laws about your husband hanging out with your son but I hung out with my step-son many times without problems. Sometimes it's best to just stay in one thread and ignore all the static that some others can create.

You have no reason not to keep moving forward. You'll look back on this and wonder why you ever worried this much. Smile

Your next step should be to finish your profile.

We need a little housekeeping on your end. Many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline OR your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer. Our answers will sometimes be tailored to a specific Embassy hence the reason for you to complete your profile. If you look at the profile of others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply as we can quickly determine their Embassy. The country that should be used is the country where the interview will take place.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile that sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question with factual information.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right-hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Once you finish that then return and you will see a flag in your profile. Select it and see what wonderful information will open up for you.

Thanks
