I had a possum on my front porch last night.

If it shows up on St. Patrick's Day, it'll be an o'possum, si man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Notable exceptions?  Boston is ok, but the other two would be in the top 5 abhorrent cities in my book.

I grew up in Boston, couldn't force me to live there now

I've never lived there, just visited for 1-2 days at a time.

But I lived in the LA area, and go to San Francisco from time to time.  And lived in NYC for a year.  Talk about abhorrent places to live.

I'll take ANYWHERE in the South any day over those places, except Louisiana.

That's okay -- more room for us in California! :D  I don't think I could live anywhere in the South -- humidity and I do not work well together. Also, politics.

The heat here is abhorrent.  Mid 90s with no end in sight

:( It's 65 and sunny here at the moment. It's going to get hottish over the weekend (low 80s) but right now it's gorgeous.

Impressed by your survey of surrounding land. :P

I have lived where you do, and places you probably would not consider.  And while the convenience of a large city (21 million) cannot be argued, the serenity of not constantly bumping into people is a welcome relief.

The truth is, a city offers nothing that a rural setting doesn't.... you just have to drive a bit further to see it all.

See, the thing is that in a city I am less likely to bump into people I don't want to see! :)

Tried the countryside, it really isn't for me. I'll be outside a small town (less than 3000 people) in Scotland shortly for a brief visit to his family home -- as his sister says, "there’s f*** all else to do up there except avoid our mother, watch EastEnders and go to the pub.” I don't watch Eastenders, so it will probably be the pub for me.

I'm one of those millennial dudes that will certainly get out of the city as soon as it's possible.

I grew up on a farm 15ish miles away from a town of 2000 so anything with a population of 5k or more for me is a city. So suburbs with still tens of thousands of people seems like a city to me given my background. I mean if you have a Walmart in your community you've got it made! We had a Supervalue...and that's it. There's not a single traffic light in that little speck of a town on the prairie. Being used to having the closest neighbor being 3 miles away in all 4 directions I love the elbow room, the ability to have a huge garden and just grow everything, and spend 2 hours mowing all the grass. Actually mowing all the grass on our farm took about 4 hours on a riding mower! I hope that one day we will be able live outside of town as soon as prices get back down to a reasonable level. Get away from people and traffic ah yis! The only downside to that is winter when a storm dumps a bunch of snow on you, the power fails, and the roads are impassable so your dad loads all 4 kids in the tractor and drives to town where there's power at grandma's house because the generator quit after day 4.

Good times!

Being a city girl myself and relocating to the countryside was quite a change. Very different to life in the UK where my husband grew up in a mix of seaside-rural and urban... and that's actually quite the sort of life I enjoy best. A nice village but a decent city not too far away. That is of course not what we have here, where you need to travel for miles to get to a store or much civilization - usually to another state, because you could get still murdered in our small town. Still, the wildlife is amazing here. Deer, bears, cougar, wild turkey, fox, raccoons, possums, turtles, eagles, beaver and woodchuck. Deer arrive every night on my property to graze and if you take a walk along the trails, you'll see all of it. Of course there's snakes too, which are always problematic. Even things like ticks I've had to teach him what to look out for.

We've been away for a week and took some hikes on some rolling estates, and while we've seen squirrels for years (he never saw one until he came here) chipmunks were everywhere. So adorable. That being said we do miss the city life - just wish property was cheaper and of course safer.
