If the U.S. is going to "collapse" as a superpower, who is going to replace it?

China? Russia?

Oh that's right, no-one.

Whose turn is it this year to use the family's brain cells, mawilson?

The end of such Rogue States as the United States will be good for the world. The americans are a lawless people that do not adhere to any International Law and actively rebutt Global Institutions.

Rather than unipolar world, the world will return to a balance of multiple powers, diplomacy, reaching consensus, for the benefit of all. Rather than this nightmare with america as the sole superpower. The demise of the united states is a certainty (and eagerly anticipated by many). A review of history will show that. Going into the Middle East was the worst mistake for the americans. My god, are they going to be taught a lesson. The Arabs do not forget, and they will chase your country looking for revenge for another thousand years.

A Chinese friend of mine said the other day, "americans are stupid." One cannot help but nod in the affirmative.

I think I met your Chinese friend the other day. He was waiting in line at Mann's Chinese Theater to help himself to the all-you-can-eat buffett!

You mean multiple powers like when the British, French, Spanish and other European powers were all jockeying for position all over the world?

That gave rise to colonialism, if I recall. It also ended up turning Australia into a criminal dumping ground.

Yes, marvelous is a world with multiple powers...

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Noone need replace US as the sole superpower. The US has only BEEN the sole superpower for 15 or so years. BEfore that there were 2, and before that there were a dozen. There is nothing unnatural about not having a global hegemon!

If you take the EU together, it deserves Superpower status now. Of course its NOT together, exactly ... China is not far from being a Superpower, and India to is coming up fast. Many of the new technologies that are coming out will radically transform these countries. For example, much of Africa now is completely skipping a generation of technology - never having landlines at all, going straight to cellular. Straight from the 18th certury to the 21st.

If China wanted, they could strip the US of its Superpower status in 1 month. All they would have to do is ank for their money back. Bush has been borrowing so heavily from the Chinese that they have a kill switch on our economy now.

BushCo's theory is that "The US is the center of the world economy. They would never actually ask for the money back because that would mean a global depression."

Thats better than the Heritage Foundation premise that in order to get rid of the New Deal social programs you first have to completely tank the economy. http://www.heritage.org/ Those guys are simply off their rockers. Some of the stuff sounds OK, but when you read what they really advocate it is absolutely insane. Unfortunately, they are also very influential.

Your absence runs through me like a needle

Pointing out that the U.S.'s status as a superpower is, like all things, transient counts as America bashing? Nothing lasts forever, and if we're looking for replacements, my money would be on China, especially since China's controlling our debt. We're ignoring science in favor of intelligent design, we have a dwindling manufacturing base, and we're going to be screwed for water in the southwest.

The thing is, a power as big as America isn't just going to disappear, and however it happens, chances are it creates a lot of suffering in a lot of the world. It's only something you'd look forward to if you're a blithering idiot, even if you don't like the United States' policies now.

Ehm, they must had at least one landline in Africa. The one I used to call my wife on.

Portlander's right about the general trend, though. Friends of mine are from Hungary, and high-speed internet & cell phones took off there before they did in most of the U.S., simply because the U.S. already had a working infrastructure with telephones and had to incur transitions costs. My friends' parents went from no phone or computer to a better system than their kids had in the U.S.

So it's not like everyone has to research and build the same research tree, I think is what Portlander's saying, so the difference between a poor country and the U.S. isn't the two hundred years of tech, but the latest innovation.

No question, China's already trying actively to usurp the superpower role from US--as even evidenced by its military buildup (including several SSBN's).

Using an old saying "if you loan a man $10,000 you're his creditor; if you loan him $10,000,000 you're his partner", China is a "partner" as foreclosing on US debt (of which China holds a massive slice) would also tank China.

Exactly. If it's something you look forward to, remember that:

  1. Major shifts of power between rising and falling great powers have always been accompanied by major wars
  2. The next "empire" could be a lot worse
