Is this a "public charge" under the new rule?

Hi all,

We are currently waiting for our interview date for AOS from a K-1. While my husband waits, he is working on his GED. He signed up to attend FREE classes through the county's literacy council. I just put together the pieces that this is a state funded program. They asked for his SSN and he has to jump through certain hoops to be enrolled in the classes (typical government stuff). I'm now wondering if he should drop out (the classes start Oct 10) before the rule goes into effect. I'm not sure if this would stand in our way when it comes time to ROC or for citizenship down the line. I can't seem to find anything in the summary or Q&A on the USCIS site that answers it for me. Has anyone read the actual document that could give a reasonable guess as to this? TIA!

I don’t believe these courses would fall under public charge rule.

 

the following are public benefits that may be considered for public charge: SSI, TANF,  cash benefit programs for income maintenance, Medicaid, SNAP, section 8 housing, subsidized public housing. 

 

One of the best things your husband can do is focus on his education so good for you guys for working towards that! 🙂

Have you filed AOS yet? if you have, even if it was an issue its not for you because you filed before the law went into effect......I think anyway
