Warren comes under new pressure over Medicare for All and higher taxes

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is coming under increasing pressure from her 2020 rivals to spell out how she’d pay for her “Medicare for All” proposal.

The pressure comes as Warren builds momentum in the race, and suggests she is likely to come under a harsher spotlight as other candidates seek to compete with her for the 2020 Democratic nomination.

Warren has been asked several times whether taxes would have to go up on the middle class to pay for her universal health care plan, most notably at the debate earlier this month in Houston.

 

She has consistently avoided giving a yes or no answer, saying instead that middle-class families’ overall health costs would decline but without specifying whether or not their taxes would increase.

Other Democrats are now accusing her of being less than candid or even dishonest about the consequences Medicare for All, an issue that has split the 2020 Democratic presidential field.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the front-runner in the race who is trying to hold off Warren, has made the issue central to his attacks on Medicare for All, saying that at least Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has been honest that middle class taxes would have to go up.

Yeah taxes would have to go up for EVERYONE if we want universal health care. The poor can get some kind of rebates as some want but we would have to raise prices for most things that even the poor would have to pay. There is no free health care as any sane person knows. Everyone has to chip in and trying to tax the rich at even 100% would not cover universal and punitive taxes on the rich and raising the middle class taxes won't cover it. Yes that means raising the taxes on corporate will have to be done and that means higher prices as they will just pass on the cost to the consumer. Probably like Canada the sales tax will be twice what we pay here now. Chit ain't free and there is no magic wand that will make this happen.

I always like the line the Dems use about raising the taxes on corporations.  Don’t they realize that people pay corporate taxes?

No they actually don't realize this. They think that taxing corporations will mean they will cut into their profit margins is all so that this is free money flowing into the Socialist coffers. Amazing that there so many people that are this stupid. 2 years ago our property taxes went up about 50 dollars a month each property...600 a year. I raised my rents on the rental properties to around 75 dollars a month more to cover the taxes. I expect only a few here will realize why I had to raise the rents 75 dollars and not just the 50 to cover the extra costs but there is a legit reason I had to do this. Was I supposed to absorb the extra costs and lower my standard of living just because the voters decided to vote yes on the bonds needed for infrastructure improvements that by the way didn't need to be done yet or at the least had other cheaper alternatives? The voters here vote yes on every bond issue and 2 of my tenants were up in arms over the increase. I told them to move if they didn't like it.

 

Wanted add this. I am not a corporate entity but was using my example as to why prices go up when taxes do.

Such a simple concept. If you add a dime of taxes to Diesel fuel , then the cost of hauling freight goes up,  So the cost of everything on the truck goes up.

 

In the end , the consumer pays for it.

Very true.  Never been a fan of tariffs, and instead would like to see free and open global trade just as I would like to see much lower taxes.
