We flew over the Gulf of Mexico (which is to say international waters) and really close to Mexico on the way to Florida (to Tampa, connecting in New Orleans on the way there and San Antonio on the way back) for a wedding ceremony with my family. Would you consider that risky?

You have made your point here however my answer on this issue stands.  I’ve been on this site since 2006 and I am not tangling up in a silly argument today comparing a hop to florida with a trip halfway across the pacific.

 

Couples wanna travel around right away - get married then file the petition.  K1 visaholders don’t have that luxury and OP needs to take that limitation into consideration when planning post-arrival trips.

 

They will likely be OK.  I wouldn’t do it and in fact many law firms advise against it.  Here is one example of many.

the only place you could divert to is into the Pacific, and I have a feeling your K1 issues would be the least off your concerns.
