Most important moment of a woman's life? Please. There will be a million more moments in one's life that end up being more important than some fancy stagecraft to ask a simple question. Proposing requires nothing elaborate and nothing 'perfection'. It requires two honest people that love each other, a ring (though these days you don't really need that either), and speaking from the heart.

I suppose I should rephrase. It's the most important moment in a woman's life up to that point; a woman who is receptive and worthy of such attention.

But I am sure people become engaged all sorts of ways. Most of the couples on this site, for example, become engaged when they click on the shopping cart button or whatever it is. If you're willing to settle for an event you'd bore your grandchildren with, if you could even remember it, then yes by all means, do it behind the skip out back of the Jack in the Box. Just don't kneel, in case you rest your knee on a used hypodermic needle.

I would indeed be leery too. It smacks of dishonesty and needless pageantry. It's the little memorable 'imperfections', the tiny little moments, that made it a special moment to me (ten years ago now!) but certainly not the most important of my life.

If you're going to be "leery" of a man who loves you with all his heart and wants the event to be perfect, then this speaks of deeper relationship problem.s But to each their own. I prefer a certain dignity and grace in these moments, and a woman who appreciates the effort.

Well, I'll let you know how this one goes. The "formal" one, lol. I expect it will be a little shambolic, but that just makes it imperfectly perfect. He has promised me that it will NOT take place at the wedding we're attending during the same visit -- he doesn't want to take away from the happy couple's special day, and while it would be awesome to have all our friends with us, BMB (which is what I sometimes refer to my ex as, for "Big Money Bags" ) will also be there as the couple are mutual friends of us all. Even I, so cruel in my theft of Netflix, would not inflict that on him. It's just rude.

By the way, Boris, I sent you an email two days ago about red flags and haven't heard back from you. :(  Can you please respond?

I shall endeavor to hope you did not click the said imaginary 'shopping cart' yourself as you are currently posting on this website and assume so much about how the people form relationships. I will certainly always remember when my husband proposed to me, imperfect as it was, certainly by your standards which matter so very little to the happy couples on this site. Yes indeed I would be leery of any man that cares more about pomposity than things that truly, actually matter.

I used to do that to him. He'd always laugh and say it was his job and that while he appreciated the effort his man-cred dictated it was only an action he must do.

Are you saying that people on this site do not use a marriage broker for the intent of marrying a foreigner? It's news to me since the site is covered in ads for them. In the "upper" forums, a day doesn't go by that somebody doesn't have a question relating to the marriage broker they have met their "fiancee" through. It's no secret that people pay these sites to correspond with and eventually meet up with a woman they intend to marry. Yet I mention it in a single post, and it's taboo?

Others here have some very non-PC observations, you don't seem to go after them with quite the ferocity, why is that?

I think people just get a little defensive when you make it sound so mercenary. I mean, yeah, maybe people met on the internet, but that's a really normal way to meet these days. People do it "domestically" in Tinder and Match and whatever, so how's that so different? Just because your ex met you in person doesn't make your relationship more real.

But on the other hand, I think people are being unnecessarily harsh with you here. I know from our separate email conversations that you're less... what's the word? Snooty? Condescending? Maybe condescending. Anyway, I know you're saying stuff to be provocative. But you should know people take this stuff personally.

Let us look at the general cross-section of the Visa Journey population.

A population of mostly men in the United States (although some women, most of whom are the target foreigner), who are using the immigration process, mostly the K-9 visa, to bring women they wish to marry to the United States.

How are these men meeting these women? Are the general male population of Visa Journey well-traveled adventurers who just happen to meet their soulmate in some far flung corner of the planet? No, of course not. The majority (again, in general) of these men are meeting these women through brokers. They pay money to these sites for the privilege of clicking on somebody who seems a good fit. They eventually travel to their "fiancee's" country for perhaps a week, to meet the requirements of the visa they will be applying for. For the vast majority it's the first time they've ever been outside North America. And I haven't even gotten in to the organized travel groups yet which make their money on men traveling to other countries (usually Eastern Europe) to find a wife as a package deal.

You can get nit-picky all you like and say perhaps that's not how YOU met your husband, or that you know so-and-so and they were students abroad or whatever, but whom I speak of is a general cross-section of the membership here, and it was whom I was speaking about in my original post.

So feel offended on their behalf if you care to, but you know I'm right.

None of this you know. You do not know the gender population of this forum, how each person met their S/O, how long they have known each other, the circumstances of each case, or even what visa they used. Your language is pure hyperbole, and your 'knowledge' is based on your personal assumptions - for what point?

Currently the remaining ads I see are Phantom of the Opera, Health Insurance for new immigrants, and Geico.

Come on. "You don't know for sure" is no argument at all. Yes, I don't have access to demographic information. But if this were a knitting forum, you would know the general demographic is house wives aged 30s to 50s. If this were a video game forum, you know the general demographic would be 15-30 year old males.

And you only need read the upper forums to see it's mostly men, and it's mostly the demographic I spoke of. So please, no games. The general demographic (yes, with exceptions) of this site is painfully obvious. And so is the fact that many, many men who have passed through these hallowed halls payed a website to make an introduction to a woman, for the sole purpose of immigration and marriage. I make no judgements of character, but only state the facts.

You objected to my use of a shopping cart metaphor, this is why you're being so obstinate. Object to my tone and use of language if you will, but you and everyone here knows the truth of it.

Or perhaps ads are based on your own information. Perhaps if your "journey is complete," the ads shift. "You don't know for sure."
