Okay probably not but I tell hubby this when he tends to like American things a lil to much. He loves everything he eats and suprisingly has not put on weight but lost it.

He should bottle his secret and sell it! He'd make a fortune...

To me A1 Steak sauce is a good substitute for HP, has a thinner consistency but a comparable taste.

The bread over here - specifically the packaged sliced bread does taste different to me than the equivalent stuff in the UK. Used to eat a lot of toast at home, but have really noticed the difference as the sweeter bread doesn't lend itself well to marmite. The only exception is non-packaged white bread which doesn't seem to have the sugar added to it.

I don't eat too much bread these days as I think I have a wheat intolerance. Cutting it out has improved my digestion a lot. Gone over to rice-cakes.

I can't tell the difference, to be honest. HFCS only makes things taste better, IMO.

;) Maybe your father was an American (milk man)! Okay probably not but I tell hubby this when he tends to like American things a lil to much. He loves everything he eats and suprisingly has not put on weight but lost it.

No need to dwell on the past, right? U.S. ketchup -- here I come!

I last had American bread in 2005, I doubt it has changed. I don't eat much bread anyway, never have, so I doubt I'll care. Too much bread makes me hiccup non-stop, a problem that I have here in the UK too. I'm gluten intolerant.

I don't eat a lot of processed foods so I don't think the fact that HFCS is in the food is going to bother me very much. I don't have a sweet tooth. Lucky me!

Actually, since being here I haven't eaten very much chocolate (unless sent to me from the UK). I prefer savoury stuff most of the time now. Although the occasional bar of UK Cadbury's is rather favourable to the old tastebuds! :D

If you're desperate, treat yourself to high-quality chocolate which is not likely to be made with HFCS. To me, Cadbury's is swill.

Me too. If I eat too much bread or other gluten-heavy products, I either hiccup uncontrollably or fart non-stop and my intestines actually shudder and make gurgling sounds that other people can hear. Unacceptable!

Put it this way - it was much worse when I drank beer back in the UK. Non-stop gas.

Seriously though - I was reading a book about wheat/gluten intolerances and it can be pretty serious. Its often undiagnosed - and gets lumped in with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (which is just a catch-all syndrome for the doctor being lazy). If you don't change your diet (basically cut out things including wheat, rye, barley etc) it can cause all kinds of problems - including certain types of cancer. All in all it can be pretty serious - not unlike being an undiagnosed type-2 diabetic.

I've an idea that wheat/gluten intolerance was behind the lymphoma scare I had in 2005. According to the book - some of the symptoms I had back then match it to a tee, and one of the UK doctors did suggest that the swollen lymph nodes were some sort of immune response.

Maybe it's "gas" in the Irish sense of the word, meaning "non-stop fun"? :P

No sh!t? Oh geez, that's not good. IBS sounds more probable in my case, but my GP told me I have a "dead giveaway" symptom for celiac disease which is hiccuping after eating bread products. I can't eat oatmeal; it nauseates me. One spoonful and I'm done.
