Hello,

 

Today I got a DMV reminder in the mail to renew my DL. It said I could either do it by mail or online, so I decided to do it online. Nowhere did it ask for proof of residency and I already have a REAL ID.

 

Has anyone else done this process online successfully? I decided to risk being asked for the extension letter (my GC expires 09/25/19) and/or losing the $37 fee if it means not having to go to the DMV!

Actually no, I got my current REAL ID DL July 2018 and it expires January 2020 (not on my birthday). Why do you say it would be non REAL ID?

Ah. So you were issued a limited-term REAL ID: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffdl32 Odds are they will send a letter requesting proof of status. Also, in your case the renewal should've been free. I assume the last 2 digits of the DD code on the bottom of the card is "23." You might want to inquire about a refund. Issuing department: (916) 657-7790

The last two digits are 20, that' the year of expiration. I've had a 1-year limited DL for the past 5 years (I think I never paid for the renewals), perhaps the 5 year mark is when I finally have to pay?

Just wanted to write an update: I got my DL-REAL ID in the mail a few days ago and it's valid for 5 years! They didn't ask for anything at all, no extension letter, no nothing.
