Change of surname

Hello everyone!! I am a US Citizen and I changed my surname to my husband’s after we got married in last March. But I did not get a new passport for the new surname cause my passport expires in 2025. So we thought of amending it at the renewal. Will that invite a problem during the i 130 processing or maybe at the final interview??

Carry your marriage certificate with the passport. It links the documents. No need for you as USC to get another passport before it needs to be renewed. Just always  make the flight reservation the same as your passport

Yes as said you can certainly travel still with your current passport and marriage certificate. However it might be easiest (but also more expensive) to update your passport so that you don't have to worry about always taking your marriage certificate and, god forbid, one day forgetting it on a day you have a flight. It's also preferable to have it in your legal name, even though it's not required, since it is a form of ID, and some countries also may not allow you to travel with a passport not matching your legal name

One more thing. Is marriage certificate the only proof that I changed my surname? Do I have to report anywhere else that I’m using his surname now? No right?

You’ll have to update your IDs, bills, insurance, anything else in your name, inform your job, etc (assuming you’ve already been to social security to have your name legally changed) but yes your proof of name change is your marriage certificate

No problem; but to answer the original question also, no your passport matching your name won’t affect your husbands visa, just may make travel more inconvenient, but it’s a non issue and up to you if you want to renew early
