Hi, I’m new to the process but I have a question. I’m about to file my petition for my fiancé who is in Ghana. Do I need to include a letter about how we met each other as well as proof of meeting each other within the past 2 years?

We met briefly in China and then I took a trip to Ghana recently to visit him and meet his family. Some advice would be appreciated! Thanks and looking forward to being on here throughout our journey!

It's recommend that you write what's called a Letter of Intent. When I submitted our I-129f, I included within the letter how we met and what we've been doing since then. To create a timeline of events.

You will definitely need to include proof of meeting within the past two years. I would show evidence such as plane tickets, hotel reservations, pictures, and misc. receipts (if you have any).

06/30/19 - Wedding Day!!

07/17/19 - AOS Packet Mailed

07/19/19 - AOS Received

07/24/19 - NOA1 Date

08/16/19 - Biometric Appt.

09/25/19 - Interview Ready to be Scheduled

10/16/19 - Interview was Scheduled

12/05/19 - Interview Day

Thank you for the reply, so our letter of intent should include that and basically reflect a timeline of our relationship? It shouldn’t be two separate letters or documents?

No timeline or explanation of how you met is required.  The letter of intent simply satisfies the requirement that both parties intend to marry one another if the visa is granted.

No letter of “how you met” is required, however some people write one. I personally wrote 2 short paragraphs of when and how we met. It was very straight to the point- no lovey dovey fluff. Again, not required. It’s your petition so you write one if you feel it’s best for your case.

You absolutely need proof of how you met within 2 years of filing your petition. Passport stamps and boarding passes (in my opinion) are  the 2 most solid pieces of evidence.

You can also include various forms of receipts (hotel, atm withdrawals)  , pictures together/with each other’s families, both yours and fiancé’s bank statements that match said timeline of when you visited each other, etc.

Thanks! Would you recommend doing a cover letter for the packet? Should I include any of our message conversations as well?

Yes I would/did a cover letter. I think it looks professional and keeps it organized on your end (even though they disassemble it all once it gets to uscis).

Messages arent required. Some people will tell you they included some and others will say it’s secondary evidence, pointless, and a waste of time, and that uscis doesn’t actually read any. Again, if you feel like it helps with your case then include some but don’t overdo it. (Maybe you can include only proof of one message a month from the time you started talking- this is what I did)

Some people on here discourage others for wanting to include secondary evidence such as messages (because it isn’t hard proof of anything- anyone can fake/photoshop messages) and some people feel as though if you have it, then why not include it.

Your petition is your petition, so as long as you include the required items, you are welcome to include anything else that you may feel help your case.

Thanks so much for the response! It was helpful. I’ll be submitting my petition tomorrow!

Do yourself a big favor and take some time to read, read, read the VJ step-by-step K1 Visa Guide. The page is chock full of information, links, tips, etc., about the what, why and where you need to successfully navigate the K1 visa process, https://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide/ .

BTW, the petition you will likely be filling out is the Form I-129F, Petition for an Alien Fiance(e), not the Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)
