Hi all,

I am currently in the US on a J1 trainee visa (until May 2020). My long term boyfriend (he’s from the US) and I want to get married soon and then I would apply for a permanent residency and work permit. My question is would the application terminate my J1 status? My sponsor would want to terminate my J1 early, as in as soon as I apply for permanent residency. After reading online and talking to some people it sounds like though I don’t legally have terminate my J1 Program before my status would be adjusted. And this would most likely be after May anyway. I just don’t want to have a period of 3-4 months of not being able to work while waiting on the work permit.

I am not subject to the 2 year home rule. Any up to date information on this topic would be great! Thank you
