I got a moving quote from upack.com and for moving from Toronto to Pittsburgh PA I found the price fairly reasonable so we'll probably go with them. I used them for a cross country move to the west coast before and it was a good experience.

Any new experiences with shipping belongings (about 2 pallets, no furniture) from Canada to the U.S.? Specifically Calgary to New England. So far UPak seems cheapest, but I'd like more options? Also does my husband have to be in the US before his stuff arrives? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

My interview is this coming Tuesday. Pending successful outcome, I'm going to ask if I can activate my visa when I go to the airport (YYZ) and then return to Canada to terminate my employment and move to the US. We plan first on flying down to our intended destination to view apartments and sign a lease, and then return to Canada to finish packing and move. We are using a moving company and they require a copy of my activated visa in my passport to ship my stuff. I'm hoping that's ok. I've sent an email to CBP asking if I can proceed that way, but they take 2 to 3 weeks to answer emails and they have limited call hours. FIngers crossed.

Do you have to fly and ship your belongings? My US boyfriend plans on driving to Toronto, packing all my stuff in a truck, and we will drive to the US together crossing the Buffalo border. Would that be a problem?

You can cross into the US through whichever method you wish.

I personally drove with my husband (then US Fiance) and daughter in a UHaul through Buffalo at the Peace Bridge and then on down to Virginia.

Thanks for the answer! Very helpful. Were the border people going through your boxes or they just saw the visa and let you be on your merry way? :)

Very rarely will they even look inside the vehicle!! 1 should have a very basic inventory list (items grouped together..not individually) You will have to go inside to hand over the "do not open" envelope Then after all thats done..u can be on your merry way!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We used Relocation Services Canada.

http://relocationservicescanada.com/

I had furniture and kids that were moving with me so we needed a truck.

They came to the house and labeled every single item and created an inventory list for me.

They loaded and left with the stuff and took it to one of their storage warehouses.

Then my fiance, the kids and I did POE at Sarnia / Pt. Huron and imported my vehicle there. We only took enough of our stuff with us to get us through about 2 - 3 weeks for clothes etc.

The moving company cannot bring your goods across until they can show proof that you have entered the US. Your stuff has to come after you. So when we got to Texas I scanned and sent them my documents. Then they had to wait until there was a "full load" coming our way. We got our stuff in about 3 weeks. Which was fine with us, because we had just closed on a house after we arrived.

The moving company took care of the customs clearance and all that paperwork. It was a lot less stressful for us to do it that way. But it was a very long distance (1600 miles) and a lot of weight. It cost about $3000.00 total.

Might be cheaper now though, with the gas prices a lot lower. If you want hassle - free moving of your stuff, give them a call for a quote.

Good luck to everyone moving this year! :)
