I agree. Even junk food should have some kind of redeeming quality. When it comes to donuts, I feel like flour fried in vegetable oil then covered with sugar doesn’t really cut it. I go for ice cream or chocolate if I really want something from the dessert menu. At least you get something out of those.

The only time I eat ice cream (мороженое) now days is when I am in Russia.

I haven’t been for a while, but my wife still goes back every year, and there are several things she eats there that she avoids here. Dairy is one. Bread is another. She has been here almost 20 years now and she still claims to be able to taste the “chemicals” in some of the food here.

The funny thing is she will tell me how much more she ate over there but she always comes back weighing 5 pounds less than when she left. Then she says she eats less here but gains the weight back after a couple of months. Which she also blames on the chemicals.

Well, isn't the broken link in your signature to a quotation about moderation in all things? :innocent: Surely I can be allowed a donut once in a while if I spend most of the week eating clean, walking to work and going to the pilates and yoga studios (no more Equinox, of course).

Oops. I'll have to have a look. One of my blockers must be blocking that :).  Or possibly I have myself on ignore. Anyway, I haven't seen it for some time.

Technically, it was referring to a different type of "moderation", but in general, yes, all things in moderation. Especially moderation.

Just to add, as a general rule I will make observations, but with the exception of my kids,  I am not coming down on people about what they should eat or not. That choice of what you eat is up to you.

For myself, I burn about 1500 extra calories or so on days when I ride my bike. That's usually 3 or 4 times a week. I lift weights most days too. For all I said about donuts, I'm pretty sure eating one wouldn't actually hurt me. I could probably have the 7 pieces of pie too if I really wanted. Ultimately it's an individual choice. If I'm going to splurge, I'd rather have a steak or something.

At the end of the day empty calories add up. Over time they can be significant. A donut a day adds up to about 40 pounds of fat a year if you don't burn it off. In the US, those empty calories are coming at us from every direction. It can catch up to us easily and it's hard to get a handle on excess weight after it's gained. Personally I found it's easier watching what I eat in the first place than trying to catch up after the fact. Some people don't have that issue. They can eat what they want, stay healthy, not gain weight. For those people, why should anyone tell them not to eat a donut? It's another area where generic advice doesn't really work.

One constant thought, is it doesn't get easier as you get older though. I do wish I had paid more attention to nutrition when I was younger.

I agree, the wife goes back twice a year, and I go over once to visit family.  We always feel like we eat so much, but are usually a few pounds lighter upon return.  I know Russians are always thought of as having a heavy potato based diet, but I know when I am there it is a lot of protein and veggies.  I have the same experience in Korea.

I know I lucked out on the metabolism front, but I still try to eat well every day. I eat a primarily plant based diet, with some meat, usually when I'm with the other half of laylalex. He needs better nutrition sources, so I am feeding him roast chicken or homemade cottage pie or even a decent lasagna occasionally. We are moving in together in 2 weeks (!) so modeling better eating will become easier. He's about to eat his last Hot Pocket! While it's true he could stand to put on a few pounds, he's focusing on putting those on in muscle rather than fat. He swears the extra gym sessions have nothing to do with us having to be in the same room next month with my ex. (Sorry Nature Boy for bringing him up again.:P)

I suggest a good computer based day planner. so you can make sure you have his day plans down once he moves in.

When my now wife arrived in the US almost exactly five years ago she got rid of my frozen pizzas.  She fed them to the squirrels.  We now have a deal, she is in charge of the meal plan and I make the zucchini bread.

Yall all need to man up like me and run your house. It says in the bible men should be in charge

P.S. I am on pouty time out because I ate some candy that has been laying in front of me for 4 weeks, waiting on going in the  balikbayan box.

It sucks that it is a national cycle, have you started Christmas decorations yet?

No she is working full time now, I doubt every available square inch of the house will have Christmas stuff in it this year. I am sure by October we will have stuff out.

I have read about tampo on here and I find it the oddest thing. When I am not happy about my fiance's behavior (like swatting me on the behind in public twice yesterday as we were walking around Berkeley) I tell him what he's doing is not nice and not acceptable to me. (Whether or not he agrees with me and changes his behavior is another matter...) But what's the point in getting mad and then somehow expecting your partner to figure out what's making you mad and how to fix it? I know it's a cultural thing, and this isn't meant as a criticism per se but I still find it... a little odd. How long did it take you to get used to it?
