It is not optional to mention them.  How would it be optional to lie on a visa application?

The correct answer is the same either way. It does not say "optional" anywhere on the form.

Can they contact them? Sure. It's certainly not the norm to do so, but there is nothing that prohibits them from doing so.

It is not an optional question.  Just answer it honestly.

(Now I wanna contact them.  You seem to be hiding something LOL)

DS-160 is a non-immigrant visa application.  Relatives in the US (any) are important information if you’re applying for a tourist visa and they want to sniff intent to immigrate (however) nobody cares how many relatives you have in the US if you are applying for a K visa and are going to immigrate permanently anyway.

If I remember correctly, it only asks for the names of immediate relatives.

If you have 50 immediate relatives, yes. But that's a lot of brothers & sisters (or kids).

The OP's screenshot lists relatives to mention (spouse, child, sibling).

Says “other relatives” on the next line.

I think this applies more to the B visas than the K visas.  I dont know if there’s a follow up asking for a list of them either.

If it says list them do so.  If it is yes/no say yes and clear it up at the interview.  A vast multitude of relatives doesn’t affect a K visa decision as long as the CO believes the relationship is valid.  It could hurt you if you don’t have a good case for strong and valid relationship.

Ah, true. But no, it does not make you list the other relative(s) for that question.

After looking at the long list of situations that require a CS-160 to be submitted, and yes, a K1 visa is also listed, however, we did not file a DS-160, only the I-129f.  That was April 2017.  Is the DS-160 needed now?

It is the actual visa application.  You must have filed it if your fiancé received the visa.
