Have CR1 Visa, Can we work?

My husband just arrived in the US with his CR1 Visa. He does not have his Green card yet (though I am told his CR1 is the same as the green card) nor does he have a Social security number yet. Can he work yet? DO they really need a SSN to give you a job or is the green card enough?

his CR1 isn't the same as the green card.. it is the stamp he got in his passport when he used his CR1 visa, that is the same as the green card.....
