Have CR1 Visa, Can we work?

My husband just arrived in the US with his CR1 Visa. He does not have his Green card yet (though I am told his CR1 is the same as the green card) nor does he have a Social security number yet. Can he work yet? DO they really need a SSN to give you a job or is the green card enough?

Green Card Granted 5/29/07

DH arrived in USA to live with me for good! 6/3/07

Filing for removal of conditions by 5/29/09

Baby girl due on 5/17/09
