I received a ticket for having a radar detector in Ontario.  they confiscated my device which costs 500 + bucks gave me a ticket and then tacked on a ticket cause they said I didn't have registration papers for my car on my person.   I m from Minnesota and we get a registration stub with a sticky attached which you stick on your license plate to update your registration.  in my opinion that sticky date is my registration and was on my car when I was stopped.  I didn't realize that til I got back to Minnesota,  I have never been asked for registration in Minnesota cause it generally is not required as long as your license has been updated by the sticky date.

should I pay the ticket?  to go back to Canada would cost nearly a thousand dollars counting airfare transportation lodging and food if I were to contest the ticket.  also should I pay the other ticket since it has already costs me 500 dollars through their outright theft of my property.   I don't plan to ever set foot in Ontario again as a result of the belligerent officer's treatment of me.  but they claim they can put a lien on my property and suspend my license.  does America vehicle departments have reciprocity agreements with the canuks of the north?

How is it outright theft of your property if they confiscated something that is considered illegal in our province? It is not different from Canadians being stopped at the border for possession of marijuana when it is legal in Canada. Ignorance is not a legal defence.

There are reciprocal agreements between Canada and certain states. I am not sure whether this applies to Minnesota but I generally pay the tickets that I am fined.

They kept my drug at the border, can I get it back?

More seriously, if you did have a valid registration, the instructions on how to contest the ticket are usually printed on the back...  Not for a ticket, but for importation of vehicle I've had to print out the info from the province website and show how a "title" was not something available, but document A was a "proof of ownership".

lemonslice   radar detectors are not illegal drugs.  they are detectors of radio waves ….. as are radios!   are you going to confiscate radios too?  I heard the Nazis and communists did that sort of thing but I never expected our neighbors to the north would copy them.  and if you are going to create such an extreme law  couldn't you at least post it on the highway so people will know.  virginia is the only state that does that and they posted it right on the border.  that prompted me to turn around and leave their state rather then dismattle my set up.  I would have done the same if Ontario had posted it and saved my tourist dollars for America.

as far as.   ignorance of the law is concerned  of course murder and theft laws are not posted on highway signs because they are crimes which everyone should  know are crimes..  banning radar detectors however is not a universal travel regulation.  they are only banned in 1 state in the usa and are also not banned in several of your western provinces.  if ignorance of the law makes it legal to prosecute unposted travel regulations,  then why not remove all traffic signs.  people entering an interception without stopping could then be prosecuted for "not knowing" a stop sign was suppose to be there.  the same is true of speed limits.  hell you wouldn't have to ban detectors then.  you could just make up stuff  if someone were driving 60 mph you could say the limit was 30 mph and ignorance of the law is no excuse.  RIGHT!!   so your explanation is inane.  traffic laws are published to let people know what is tolerated and give them the opportunity to obey.  failure to post regulations is just outright government corruption now that I know Ontario is corrupt  I wont be spending any vacation dollars there again.

adw and jop   drugs laws are one sign   traffic regulations is another.  of course all legal manners regarding crime are not posted on traffic signs because they have nothing to do with traffic,  they are considered to be crimes against the state.  traffic laws are regulations  not crimes.   that's why a bridge sign will warn a truck driver if 5 tons of freight would collapse the bridge.  failure to post that would be catastrophic.  all regulations should be posted.  otherwise how are we going to know about them?  that is why I consider Ontario to be a thief.  a good neighbor would have told me I couldn't use the device and given me a warning.  that could have been posted on the police network.  then if  I used the detector again after being warned not to  I would clearly be guilty of intentional violation.

lemonslice  I don't intend to contest it  my satisfaction will be to not visit Canada.  my other issue was can Canada come across our border and enforce this stupid law In another country?  if they cant then why pay the fine?  I ve already lost 500 dollars  that s penalty enough   but if I have to pay I probably will.  but in the long run Canada will pay more through loss of my business.

I'm not sure that the country of Canada cares about one person's business.  I remember people telling me in retail "well I just won't come here anymore" and it was like, ok... Have a great life!

BTW I'm sure you know it's also illegal in Minnesota to have a radar detector attached to your windshield right?

Did you also now it's illegal to turn right on a red light in NYC?

Perhaps that radar detectors are completely illegal in Virginia?

Maybe you even know can't wear headphones while driving in Colorado?

No? Well you're subject to the laws of the place you are in. You can get a ticket and your items confiscated regardless.

FYI pot is legal in Canada but the CBP can confiscate it and arrest you if you attempt to bring it to the USA where it's not federally legal.

SO.... if you want your detector back then contest the ticket.  I mean mine cost me $500 so I'd be asking for that back but maybe your walmart can cut you a great deal. Who knows! :D

well sir  no I did not know you could turn right in new York city.  but that doesn't bother me because hell would

have to freeze over before id ever drive in nyc.  I haven't even visited.  once I got lost trying to bypass it and ended up in the Bronx  thanks to a kind gas truck driver  who was familiar with the terraine  well he helped me escape with his directions.  if only there were more kind people in the world and a few less smart asses.  I usually don't use that right turn rule anyway except on very lightly traveled streets  I m sure the cops aren't going to patrol those especially when they have their hands full of drug busts murders and rapes.

as for virginia radar detectors  yes I did know that oh great wizard because they had a sign at the border and it was also posted on the web site.

as for having a law in Colorado about not wearing ear phones  REALLY?   well that was pretty obscure  for sure but if anyone anywhere any time wears ear phones while driving as far as I am concerned you may pull them out of the car and shoot them!!!   what kind of an idiot would do that?  I guess there must be some idiots in Colorado!!  I mean whats next  a law that says its against the law to drive blindfolded????   those kinds of laws pop up because one or two idiots did it and the government decided they better make a law against it else some more idiots might try it

and as for ignoring your customers complaints  that's a good recipe for going bankrupt.  I and my son got a bad deal from an auto dealer in Minnesota.  I decided as an ARMY OF ONE  I would not do business with that dealership again or buy another Chrysler product again.  now I know you will poo poo this cause you are the great wise one who ignores his customers but here is what happened.  the owner of that franchise apparently was flippant on a lot of other matters and ended up on the wrong side of the law.  he eventually ended up in a Minnesota jail.  and Chrysler... well about 3 years later they went belly up.  Daimler in Europe now owns them they still use the name but its not Chrysler anymore.   pretty good days work for an ARMY OF ONE,   do onto others as you would have them do onto you.  that's a good law that I try my best to follow.  too bad there are others who disagree
