K1 Guidance - A Bit Nervous!

Hello, (PANAMA CITY CONSULATE)

My fiancee and I have been approved by the USCIS 2.5 months after filing (I, the petitioner, received an approval notice via mail), and approved by the NVC 1.5 months after that (I received this approval via email, but it was addressed to my fiancee, the beneficiary). The email says the app is being sent to the Embassy in her country. I am a bit confused on what happens next.

  1. Will I receive some sort of notification when the US Embassy in my fiancee's country has processed the application?
  2. In the meantime, what should we be doing? Should we already be preparing the additional paperwork (DS-160, police certificates, her medical exam, evidence of financial support I-134, evidence of relationship)?
  3. What is a police certificate?
  4. Can she just use the same evidence of relationship we used in our i-129-f petition?
  5. Does she just bring this paperwork to the Embassy with her when she is prompted to schedule the appointment?
  6. How will the Embassy contact my fiancee to schedule the appointment? They have a postal address and her home phone number, not her email. I don't trust these measures of communication.
  7. What if we cannot get all of this paperwork in order before the interview is scheduled. I've read it is sometimes difficult to get a medical exam scheduled.
  8. How do we pay the filing fee for the DS-160? Is it brought we her to the Embassy?

I am very sorry for the questions. The process is stressful as you all know and I am not fully understanding the descriptions on the government website.

If you truly want help you need to identify the consulate.   Once the petition leaves NVC the process has 140 variations because each consulate sets their own process

  1. Will I receive some sort of notification when the US Embassy in my fiancee's country has processed the application? You have just started the next phase of the process, see K1 Flowchart.
  2. In the meantime, what should we be doing? Should we already be preparing the additional paperwork (DS-160, police certificates, her medical exam, evidence of financial support I-134, evidence of relationship)? see K1 Flowchart
  3. What is a police certificate? It will be explained in the embassy's instruction packets.
  4. Can she just use the same evidence of relationship we used in our i-129-f petition? See the VJ K1 Visa Guide.
  5. Does she just bring this paperwork to the Embassy with her when she is prompted to schedule the appointment? see K1 Flowchart and embassy instructions
  6. How will the Embassy contact my fiancee to schedule the appointment? They have a postal address and her home phone number, not her email. I don't trust these measures of communication. see K1 Flowchart, they will get email addy, etc.
  7. What if we cannot get all of this paperwork in order before the interview is scheduled. I've read it is sometimes difficult to get a medical exam scheduled. Hard to say, you have more pressing issues to deal with now....
  8. How do we pay the filing fee for the DS-160? Is it brought we her to the Embassy? It will be explained in the embassy's packets.

Welcome to the forum.

First things first, let's get the proper names for the process. You, the fiancee (US petitioner) just had your K1 visa petition approved. The visa will be issued if all goes well, when your fiance passes their interview at the interviewing embassy/consulate. You really should take a look at the VJ K1 visa Flow Chart, https://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow/ . The timeline is not current, due to the current prolonged processing times. However, the steps in the process are correct. You had better get up to speed on the descriptions/names of this process.  Another thing to look at is the VJ K1 Visa step-by-step guide: https://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide/. Another place to look at is the VJ interviewing embassy web site,  https://www.visajourney.com/consulates/index.php?ctry=Panama&cty=Panama

Last, become acquainted with the VJ K1 Forum, join a monthly thread posting, review some postings......and read !!!!

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Thank you for your response. What I am confused about is I received a letter via email from the NVC addressed to my fiancee, saying they would reach out to me when the Consulate is ready to process the petition. On the flow chart it says the forms and checklists will be sent to the beneficiary. This is where there is a disconnect in my mind.

Most consulates communicate via email.   Unless they have the applicants email they will most likely send to yours.   I would search for the Panama instructions.   It is possible that someone on here who has gone before you via Panama has a copy of the instructions

Ok - thank you for your help. Yes, they don't have the beneficiary's email, only mine (the petitioner). I will look for someone from Panama as that will probably be best.

Initially, the consulate in Guangzhou did not have my then-fiancee's email address. They snail-mail contacted her with some initial information and obtained her email address from her then. It was not necessarily a disconnect, it was what is was. At that time, my attention was more focused on her filling out the forms for her and her son, planning on how to get the original wet signature I-134 document to China, and a few other salient points. For example, at that time, and I don't know whether it continues to this day. It seems that the Chinese and US governments play a bit of cat and mouse with each other's diplomatic mail. The Chinese would quarantine US diplomatic mail in a warehouse for an unknown length of time, and evidently the US would do the same on their end.  Well, the problem is that in those diplomatic mail pouches was our paperwork that had be sent from the NVC. The consulate was sometimes using an improvised electronic system to get the paperwork. The cat and mouse game could stall your visa processing at the consulate by months.... We are not talking about getting somebody's email address, we were talking about the entire visa petition packet. Eventually, the diplomatic mail pouch was released from quarantine, or the consulate opted to use the electronic copy of the files. There are all sorts of funky things that can occur during your visa journey...don't sweat the small stuff, and remember that this entire journey is not a sprint race, but it is rather a marathon, pace yourself.

Good luck on your immigration journey.
