You know, it doesn't do much good to completely dismiss us out here. I am a pinko red diaper baby, and I am open to hearing new ideas. I am not alone.

Do you really think the elected leaders in LA, LA County, or CA would listen?  You may be open minded, but by appearances, since CA has essentially become One Party Rule, the leaders seem to think they know best, and are not open minded at all.

Personally, I think President Trump is simply doing this for the national attention.  I am sure the local media in LA and CA are covering this issue, but the mainstream media is not really shedding light to this problem nationally.

Yeah, well, it sucks because pretty much every one of my friends out here -- who by far and away identify somewhere on the left hand side of the political dial -- all think that we're not being served at the local or state level on this issue. On my way to work this week, I saw the cops clearing out a homeless encampment under an I-10 overpass. I pass by this every day, twice a day. It had gotten out of control, to the point where the sidewalks were impassable. Now, the clear out is done for public health reasons but it does have the effect of moving things along for at least a day (yeah, tents back up the next day). It's just unsustainable.

I don't know who the politicians think they are serving except the people who are shouting the loudest about the need to respect the dignity of the homeless. I get that, I want to respect their dignity as well, but I would also like MY dignity respected. I would like to be able to walk to the local fancypants grocery store a half mile away and get my organic arugula and champagne and country pate without worrying I'm going to step in human feces. Okay, that's a little OTT, but seriously, I have stopped going to a particular market because it is just not safe unless I drive, and it seems stupid to drive that short a distance. In my own neighborhood, there is a lot of concern about a new, 100-unit development that may or may not rise on the site of an old Albertsons supermarket. I am absolutely for construction of these units -- they are the sort of mid-income units needed desperately. Supply and demand, hey? Add more units to the market, rents go down; rents go down, fewer people are pushed into homelessness. But there are any number of my neighbors who are more concerned about all the cars, and having to sit longer at the intersection where the development will be, and how it will (I sh*t you not) add about 10 minutes on to their commute. Eff these people! I would rather spend 10 more minutes on my commute home and have people in my neighborhood housed. Oh, and also the new building will have a 5G tower on it, which means gamma rays and government control don't you know (god I love my tinfoil hat neighbors, bless their hearts).

I am curious as to the mid-income units.  Will they be cost controlled, or would they increase in cost as time goes on?  As to your idiot neighbors, well, screw them IMO.

Well, I'm hoping to go to the meeting next week, depending on my work schedule. I expect they will be pegged to COL increases on a yearly basis. The question is, since these won't fall under the LA rent control ordinance as new builds, whether the landlord can have units revert to market rate after the initial tenant moves out.

On a professional level, I have to be anti-rent control. We represent both landlords and tenants, but when it comes to residential, we represent only landlords. However, I would kill to get into one of those West Hollywood rent controlled units. Completely hypocritical, I know!

It is an interesting issue and I seriously doubt Trump would want to get involved beyond the looks this is what happens if the Dems get a super majority.

I hear the same things about Denver, well not quite on the same scale, Denver does have the advantage of a harsh winter. So there is a bit of a clear out.

I could comment on your lack of exclusivity and diversity but not sure that helps, It does get mentioned elsewhere, certainly the UK media often covers San Fan, Seattle and LA.

There is obviously no quick and easy solution, it would need to start with a political will to address the issue and seems to me there is not one, reminds me of many similar situations at the Federal level except here we have theoretically one party rule but many competing interests within that party.

I do hit the LA Times etc now and then and am aware in the round of the issues, nothing I have seen suggest a practical solution. A fair chunk is drug and crime related, the actual homeless aspect theoretically would be easier to solve but gets messed up in one.

Makes me wonder what will happen when things get bad, not sure when that will happen but it is coming.

I was up in the Bay Area last weekend/first half of this week on a recon mission -- while I didn't go into SF, I was in Berkeley, San Rafael and Alameda. I was... surprised to see in Berkeley the relative absence of homeless encampments. I did spot a large one near a freeway on ramp, but certainly not under every overpass. From what we read about the place down here, I was expecting zombies roaming the streets, terrifying students. Instead, we had some lovely meals including one of the best paellas I've ever had, and spent much time perusing bookshops and chatting to a lovely leftist sofa store owner originally from Germany. Now, of course that's a city of ~100k as opposed to this megalopolis, but still. And in San Rafael? I don't think they allow homeless people up there.

It was La Marcha -- we went for the earlier of the two happy hours. Fully greeded ourselves out with five tapas and a paella mixta, plus wine and Spanish cider. Then we went back to the AirBnB and passed out in food sweats.

You were in my neighborhood! Glad you got to enjoy West Berkeley. Get a donut next time you're around, I'm told they're not breakfast but actually dessert but YOLO.

The LA Times has some very good reporting on homelessness here, from all sides of the political conversation. Quite a good opinion piece from yesterday that matches up fairly well with my own thoughts: https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2019-09-18/homeless-solutions-housing-shelters-rooms-los-angeles-skid-row I hadn't caught the expansion of conservatorship in SF, which is certainly one way to tackle the issue as long as safeguards are in place.

I  had actually read that article and looked up what they are doing in SF, read this for a better view http://www.sfweekly.com/news/after-months-of-contentious-arguments-s-f-passes-mental-health-conservatorship-bill/comments/

I thought this bill actually expressed very well the haphazard nature and the politics involved that prevent anything substantive happening.

Easy fix. Send the illegals home, move the homless into the huge illegal holding facilities.  Showers, medical care, xbox, 3 squares. Problem fixed.  Its really that simple

What will a mid-income unit do to fix the homeless situation?  Does anyone besides me think that homeless people don't HAVE mid-income?  Or income at ALL, for that matter?
