How to help my husband feel useful when he doesn't have a job yet?

Hey there, as title says, my husband who immigrated recently is still job hunting. He's also learning English at the same time so he's still getting his confidence up in that aspect and it's been difficult for him to go out for jobs mostly due to this reason.

He likes to work and provide for the household but I think he is starting to feel too pressured, it's been almost three months since he's been here and he sees me supporting both of us and it's making him feel a little down. It doesn't help that every time he visits my parents, all they ask about is if he has a job yet (i had to tell them to shut up and stop asking that question because it was super annoying!!)

He has a bike, and right now we share my car... but what would you suggest to someone who speaks mainly Spanish, that they can do during the day to keep occupied and feel useful? He has fixed stuff around the house already, incorporated some exercise into his daily routine also.

What can I do to help him out?

My husband experienced this as well. The time before his EAD came was so hard. I'm not sure where you are, or what resources you have available, but he could look into volunteering at a school possibly working with spanish classes, giving presentations about his home. If there's a college or university nearby, maybe he could try tutoring in Spanish.

I know it was also helpful for my husband that I compliment him a lot. It was so hard for him being home all day while I was at work, when I got home it helped if I was consistent about reminding him how much I appreciate him and his sacrifice to move so far from home.

My Vietnamese wife found a part-time job at Wal-Mart. They hire a lot of ESL immigrants and there are many jobs your husband can do there without having a mastery of English. Maybe work at a restaurant with Spanish-speaking employees. Manufacturing jobs don't always require English mastery. Network through a church or volunteer groups. The United Way is a great organization that helps just about everyone needing it.
