Hi!

My social security card arrived in the mail today (*happy dance*), but I’m facing some confusion now. I applied the second business day after POE in my maiden name and the card arrived after we’d already gotten married, so my surname is now different.

Should I sign the card with my maiden name just for consistency’s sake? Or put my current name?

You take the old card and your proof of name change and go to ssa office to make a change,it's needless signing it because you will be getting another card with the rectified name but same ssn.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I looked into it a little bit here on VJ and it seems attempting this will fail until I have an EAD (or GC - whichever comes first) I can bring to the SSA with me while attempting the name change, otherwise it will fail?

I need to bring my SSN today or tomorrow to my husband’s HR analyst at work so I can officially be added to his insurance.

Well I have no idea which one comes first in your case concerning ead and ssn rectification because I have not dealt with that situation. But imo if an ssn could be issued to you without ead, why should it be required for a name change?

Ss office need i-94 unexpire to issue a ss card, if i- is expired then you need show ead card for then change name or issue another card.

If your i-94 is goid, then you take your passport, marriage certificate and i-94 to ss office and they make the change.

i-94 need be good at least 14 before going expire.

if no the wait to ead or green card.

my i -94 was expired after marriege, then i wait my ead and went back to ss ofice and changed my name.

You can sign it with the name printed on the card. No issue.

Note that the I-94 has to be unexpired with at least 14 days left, per SSA guidelines.
