Hi. Just did my interview for a k1 visa in singapore, and it went well, but they are asking for more documents to be submitted as they say i should nominate a joint sponsor. My fiance's annual income is $20,150 which is below the income requiremnt, but we are puzzled as to why they dont consider his cash deposit in bank which is almost $500,000. Is cash asset not considered if ur below the income requiremnt? It confuses us a lot as i read that cash assets can be use to cover the income difference. Ur thoughts will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Some consulates, such as USEM, will not consider assets........You will likely have to find a joint sponsor with sufficient current income....

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

The CO makes a decision based upon the totality of the circumstances. They are not required to look at assets. That said, exactly what evidence of income and assets did you provide? I would start there. If that documentation was complete, then I would look at getting a co sponsor.

NOTE: Assets can be considered for the I-864 for AOS later...so a co sponsor here may only be temporary.

Could it be low income with a large amount of cash in the bank raises a flag?

I would say the same thing. Unless the income is a modest pension, it’s unusual for someone on not much more than minimum wage to have such assets. How long has the cash been in the bank? I recall a case where cash assets were used (not Singapore but Sweden) and the applicant had to provide all sorts of documentation to show where the money came from, how long it had been in the bank, etc. In that case it was from the sale of a house so they had to provide all the paperwork associated with the sale.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

Bingo. If it was, say, an insurance payout or inheritance, then the large assets doesn't raise much of a question. If there's not a good explanation, the assumption may be that it is just being put into one's account for immigration purposes (i.e. via friends or family members), and isn't really available to support the person.

Hi again, thank you for all the comments. He did received the a large amount both from insurance payout and inheritance. He did made the deposits in 2016 and 2017 respectively. He is a retured corporate lawyer so he also has some checking account. We submitted bank statements of his cash deposits but not the statement of his checking acct which is only around $35,000 currently. Will his checking acct be enough to cover the income differece?  Thanks in advance for any input..

It shouldn't if they are retired. They probably just get in the habit of looking at income.  Who knows. I have stopped trying to predict what they actually look at))

Finally done...
