Well using the term old boys club could result in you mis gendering posters.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Have some more coffee. You picked a fight with me, you insulted me. I politely clarified, and added to the on-topic discussion.

I apologise if my choice of writing instrument is a trigger for you, I only mentioned my preference because somebody else brought it up.

I've been warned by moderators not to insult other posters, but it seems there's an old boys club around here that allows select members to get away with it. Typical, but I will continue to take the high road. I hope your day gets better, Steele.

Then you probably shouldn't have said:

Speaking of pens, did you have any opinion on the rollerball pen I posted a pic of a couple of days ago? I don't expect you'll think highly of it. But I'm trying to come up with an idea of a better pen for him. He rejected the idea of a fountain pen, apparently they are for "poncey toffs" only. I pointed out he's a bit of a toff but apparently being Scottish cancels that out in some way I can't quite figure out.

Oh wow, I just dragged my own thread off topic! I'd better get out of bed, brunch at 1 in Magnolia Park. You're welcome to join us,  Boris. No boxed wine, I promise. 😁

Is that what this is about? Had you been following a separate discussion, you would have known this was a joke. @laylalex knew it was a joke.  I believe she has mentioned in the past that she doesn't need any knights in shining armor coming to her defense.

So it might come as no shock to you whatsoever that I have not been warned about the box wine comment. Do feel free to report me if you think it appropriate, but also recognize that if you do not report me, then you de facto acknowledge it as not an insult, and you should retract your comment.

Apologies for missing this comment. I do not in general favour rollerball pens. There are some that are acceptable, but none that will ever be as good as a decent fountain.

Having said that, a rollerball would make an acceptable gift for one who isn't as discerning.

Thank you, but I shall pass. I have brunch plans of my own, also not involving boxed wine. 😉

It was not my intention to upset you. This was about clarifying where the use of grammar came from. You attempted to blame it on box wine. I provided you a link that actually clarified it for you. That is all.

Not sure where the rest is coming from. If I was picking a fight with you or insulting you, rest assured you would not have to speculate where I was coming from. I am fairly direct that way.

Perhaps a misunderstanding then.

I'm off to my brunch date, I shall return later to catch up on all fountain pen and boxed wine related conversation. Ta.

Neither did I, nor should anyone else. However it did merit an explanation as to where your assertion was coming from. It did not merit getting the whole thread off track for 3 pages.

Thank you for posting the grammar girl link. I did appreciate the conversation about *why* some men don't understand how the use of "female" as a noun can be (not necessarily is) offensive. And I don't necessarily see it as off topic, because it's a bit of an insight, I think, into why men buy into certain beliefs, for example, the whole "fairer sex" thing. Why do some men think girls and women are more delicate, more in need of protection and coddling than boys and men? I see that mindset as symptomatic of traditional masculinity.

And if I wanted to be unkind, I could say you were mansplaining my own thread to me. But I won't. 😇

The numerous posts about grammar would definitely qualify as off topic. Not a big deal most of the time, unless it's derailing legitimate attempts at discussion. There is nothing in the TOS specifically about being off topic. Sometimes the mods join in, other times they give a warning to get back to the topic, and sometimes they delete the whole mess.

Whether off-topic or on, everyone should please be nicer without over-needling.

[Mod hat off]

Great insult (inspired by author quoted just above):   "Ah, stick your fountain pen back in your codpiece!"

Grammar:  "Sex" = male/female; "gender" = masculine/feminine/neuter.

Address:  "female-type-woman-of-the-opposite-sex" seems to cover the waterfront.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
