If you requested for a Social Security Number via DS-260, when does that typically get processed and received after visa approval?

The SSN gets issues after your enter USA. SSA will issue it and your SSN card will be mailed to you. Typically takes 2-3 weeks for the card to arrive after you enter the US. If it doesnt arrive in  a month then go to local SSA office in the US and inquire status of it.

Are here any rough numbers on how long it takes untile a Completed/Documentarily Qualified Case at the NVC gets passed to an Embassy?

That is to say no how long it takes them to schedule an interview but how long until the case is now with the Embassy?

Hello All,

I trust this is the best thread to ask the question I have, because everyone here is DQ and waiting at the inteview phase of the process, and someone may have gone through this scenario already.

So, my hubby and I received case numbers from NVC Sept 13th, We have paid the fees and getting ready to fill & upload docs. The issue is my hubby's(beneficiary) current passport has an expiration date of May 20th 2020, which is about 8 months more till expiration. I understand there is a 6 month passport validity rule from date of visa issuance to departure date from the US.

Are we safe at this stage (NVC upload) to submit the current passport bio page or would you suggest we obtain a new one before submitting to NVC. I guess my concern is that what if our case does not get reviewed anytime soon and by the time it get's reviewed it is less than 6 months to expiry.

He definitely plans on taking a new passport to the interview, the new passport is not ready yet. The dilemma is are we ok to upload the current one now and take both the old and new to the interview or wait to upload the new one.

I hope my question is clear and I can get some answers here. TIA

Hello Nyhearts,

(1) Do away with the fears or doubts you're experiencing and stop delaying your immigrant visa case.

(2) Go ahead and submit your financial and civil documents to NVC with the passport you have now.

(3) Submit all the required documents in PDf files and do that correctly. Your documents should be review by the NVC within the next 4-6 weeks.

(4) Even if the validity of your husband's passport is less than 6 months by the time it's time for his visa interview, that won't stop the C.O from issuing his visa.

(5) It can only go two(2) ways. It's either his visa is issued on his current passport or the C.O will request for him to submit a new passport (which he would have gotten before then), for his visa to be issued.

(6) Have an amazing week.

(7) Bye for now.

I just want to 100% sure I will not get a message from NVC to reupload a new passport bio page after waiting 4-6 weeks and that could add another 4-6 weeks after resubmission.

That is why I wanted to know if anyone has been in a situation where NVC asked them to resubmit a new passport due to expiration on passport being less than 6 months.

Thanks for your response and have an amazing week as well.

If you are not in a hurry, how long will it take for him to get a new one?

My husband's old passport was set to expire next March. To be safe we got a new one made before submitting to the NVC. However it only takes a week or so to get a new passport in my husband's country.

If you are not in a rush, personally if it’s me I will just wait and use the new passport. 🙂

When you upload you can add comments to a copy in the additional documents section saying "passport renewal in process. Will bring updated one to interview" and submit like that. We put a note next to my husband Adhar card saying "Official birth cert from courts in process and will bring to interview" and they approved.

You'll also need to update the I-130/485 forms with the new number so bring a new copy to the interview. It MIGHT cause a brief delay at the interview stage so if you want to be 100% certain get the new one before submitting to NVC as you'll need the number on your forms. Either option will work but how they will process it we don't know.

Ooh I didn't think about this. We need to bring a new I-130 with the new passport number to the interview??
