Hi all. Once again, I know I'm jumping the gun a little but I've been searching the topics for over an hour on this subject. I know this may be a real pain to do, but if anyone is bored and has nothing better to do, could you tell me what exactly is in packet 3 from Montreal? What is on the checklist and what forms do they send for my fiance to fill out? I appreciate any help. :)

They are going to send you the DS230 Part 1, the DS156 and DS 156K.

You'll also get the notorious "checklist"

Your fiance will have to fill out the DS230 Part 1 and check mark the checklist with the appropriate items.

Then, send those 2 things back to the Consulate.

Your fiance can gather things in preparation of your NOA2, but some things, like your police report, and medical, are only good for a certain amount of time.

Make sure you have your long form birth certificate, any past divorce papers etc.

Wait for your NOA2 and then start to gather.

Don't worry, you'll be there soon.

It may just be in Ontario, but it's your birth certificate showing your parents' info. It's not just that little card that's laminated. It may only be on Ontario that there's a long form birth certificate.

You'll have to check it out. But if you are in Ontario, that's the one you'll need for the interview.

Nope, all pretty much the same throughout canada. Must have your parensts info on it as well.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Okay so on this infamous checklist, are these things that he has to have IN his hands at the time he sends it back with the DS form?

You are "supposed" to have these things in your hand so that they don't have to wait for you when they send you the interview. It's to make you be prepared.

However, if you are going through Montreal you are going to have a few months wait before your interview.

What I did, was I got my packet 3, checked everything off that was applicable, fille dout the DS230 Part1, and mailed the whole thing back 2 days later saying I had everything.

Then I went about getting my medical done, police clearance, long form birth certificate. I sent my checklist back in end of Nov and my interview wasn't until Feb.

If you have a straight forward case, as I did, I say go for it. It all depends on your level of comfort. But you know you'll be waiting at least a month, so once you have that NOA2, start gathering. It'll be a few weeks between your approval and them sending you your packets 3 anyways.

Once you are approved, call the NVC and get your case number and with that number you can do most of the things.

Hope this helps!

Yes, that does help, quite a bit. Thank you very much. I know I won't be getting my NOA2 till who knows when and of course that gives me time to sit and worry about everything. But I'd rather be prepared way ahead of time, than not prepared at all. I really appreciate the help.

Sorry for jumping in, but I also have a question in regards to Packet 3 (We've recently received our NOA2, so we're still waiting for Packet 3...).

I was looking at the DS156 example form and it asks "Do you intend to work in the U.S.?" and "Do you intend to study in the U.S.?" This applies to a long time down the road, right? In the example form that's filled out, the response to the first question is "With work authorization, employer unknown." This makes sense, as how am I supposed to know what jobs I can get when I'm finally in the U.S.?

Since I'm a teacher in Ontario right now and my teaching cert's useless in California, I'll have to go back to school to get re-certified... so for the second question, "Do you intend to study in the U.S.?", what kind of response do I write? "Yes, eventually, but I have absolutely no idea when or where yet"?

I'd write something like "yes-recertification" or something to the effect and you can explain later.
