My wife's here on fiance visa and we just got married last week in Vegas. (L) They have her maiden name listed on the Marriage Certificate. Is this normal? How would I go about changing her maiden name to my last name?

Before we got married, we went to the social security office and got her an SSN. Now, I am planning on filing for AOS this week and I have no clue as to how and when I can make this name change.

Any advise would be helpful.

Thanks,

Armen B)

Yes it is normal for marriage certificate to have maiden name on it.... to change her name to yours all she has to do is start using it.... file for AOS in her married name..... change bank accounts to married name and when you ger EAD change SSN to married name..... Just make sure you have lots of copies of the certificate as everyone one will want to see it....

Congratulations and good luck...

To clarify Kezzie's earlier comment, all I have to do is just write my last name on the I-485 instead of her maiden name and this will do the trick? Even thought the I-485 doesn't state that this is OK?

Yes. There is a spot for 'other names used'. Put the maiden name their.

We were married in vegas and thought the same thing. good luck!

Just talking about this tonight with friends, incidentally. This is one of the few (if only) times when you can legally change your name for free with a minimum of hassle and fuss. Very nice benefit of being married and it applies to the male spouse too!

Your spouse can start the process for getting official documents in her married name by showing her marriage certificate to the appropriate people (USCIS, banks, school, SSA, etc.). She can immediately file her AOS in her married name, and just note her maiden name under any previously used names, etc.

It's important to make sure you tell any official agencies or whatnot of the change of name, like insurance companies and whatnot.

Hmmm. I am not sure if this has happened to anyone else, but when I was getting married they asked my wife what option she wanted to use for her last name (maiden, my last name, or any combination of the two), and that is clearly shown on the marriage certificate. Maybe it is just that different states do it differently.

I think it varies state to state.
