My take on this: Why gamble? The information they have about you is limited already, plus the fact that they do this things everyday and it must be very boring... You want to show them that you REALLY want to be there, make it easy for them to accept you, not harder. If there are optional steps you could take, take them. Sometimes that makes a difference.

I don't disagree.

My take is, if the purpose of the social media accounts is for evidence of relationship I think I provided way more substantial evidence in the I-129F, I overloaded that with evidence.

Presumably they are for national security reasons to cross reference against known entities....they aren't going into everybody's accounts to see what they post.

It isn’t.  It’s a component of background check.

Which is why when it’s not provided the IO cheerfully pulls the flush handle at the counter and sends the applicant into the swirling bowl of AP.

Do what you want but I advise you to at least educate yourself on this process so that you at least know what the questions are for and for what purpose the information that you and the applicant are being asked for will be used.

I doubt it will be a problem. I don't have social media but if I did I probably wouldn't provide it. Not everyone has it, and not everyone posts lots of details or uses messenger. She should just be ready to answer if they ask.

Good for her for trying to keep what she can private. I don't mind giving out my fingerprints, ssn etc in a petition, but that doesn't mean they need to know everything about my life if it's not relevant. It's not required, no need to provide it. This is especially true if you have lots of other evidence.

Something I learned a long time ago and it continues to be true today. He who has the gold makes the rules. You don't have the "gold"  and therefore you may face stiffer penalties from the one who has the gold.

Oh I see you have another post about not understanding why you need to fill out a I-134 when "most" of that information is contained in the I-129f. Your building yourself a reputation.

Ha! I see where  you're going with this. Haven't heard of this one before. Nice one.

Exactly.  And actually using those usernames within social media puts them at greater risk of ID theft than disclosing them to the DOS.

I'm guessing if other doesn't provide much info on SM but the DOS gets the full report (According to the forms submitted and all of that!), what kind of ID theft is this? Pretty minimal?

On a separate note, my husband and I didn't provide our SM but we provided that we used whatsapp majority of the times and didn't mention SM at all so it could be a different thing. We already passed K1 stage and going into AOS now. Wasn't asked for the 221g form or whatever it was.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this and contemplating not filling in their social media details, if they have social media - please read the screenshot below.

Do do you have social media? (Yes or no). If you have not used social media within the last 5 years, select none.

It does not, as any point, say ‘if you have not used social media within the last 5 years or if you just don’t fancy telling us about it, select none.’

If you select ‘none’ and you have social media, you just lied on your DS160. On one of the questions they use to conduct security checks.

I would say that’s probably not a smart move - and if you are found out, it looks incredibly suspicious that you’ve chosen to keep that info secret (plus, if you lied there, how do I, the  interviewing officer, know if you’ve lied elsewhere in the form too?).

So yeah, please note that filling in that section is NOT OPTIONAL...and lying really isn’t recommended, for anywhere on your form, unless of course you want to be denied your visa.

The social media section was introduced at the start of June this year I believe - so way after you filled in the DS160, so you wouldn’t have needed to provide those details. 🙃

Does she have a unique name? You should google her and see what kinds of sites popup that are associated with her. You could expect to be questioned about those. Also the social media questions are part of the DS-260 which are used for EB visas as well so the primary purpose is NOT for establishing relationships
