California Drivers License

I'm hoping someone can advise re this, as I’m a little confused.

I plan to emigrate to LA in November (K1 interview is in a couple of weeks).

I understand I can apply for an AB60 license when I first arrive - however, we live fairly near a train station and I like biking and walking, so we planned for me to wait until we’ve got married and sent off for AOS (and I can start job hunting) until I apply for a license - as I won’t need to drive until I’m working or due to start working.

As such, appreciate I won’t be able to drive my fiancé’s car on my UK license - but what we’d hoped to do was me to hire a car in January/February, when my friends and family come out for the wedding - as that’s the only time I’ll need to drive.

If I’m using a hire car, will I be ok to drive on my UK license then, as obviously their insurance etc is set up differently to cover international drivers - or will it be a no go, as whilst I’ll have an international license, I technically will be a Cali resident (as will have been there for 2 months)?

Thanks for any advice and apologies if this counts as high jacking (thought it linked in with the original topic).

No go

Book your office appointment at the DMV now.  A lot of them in the Los Angeles area are booked through November right now.  I had to have my appoinment in Pasadena and it was a 7 week wait for it.

Yeah, I’m flying out on Thursday for a visit so we’re going to look into all the ins and outs and try to get something booked in. We’re up in Santa Clarita, so hoping it’s a little quieter up there for the DMV (though saying that, my friend did his test in NoHo only a few months ago and I’m sure he said he only waited a month...so maybe it has peaks and troughs...)
