Friends,

My fiancee lives in Kyrgyzstan and has a 3 year-old poodle. Of course, she wants to bring the dog with her to the USA because it will be difficult to find the dog a good home in her home country. Unfortunately, I live in a condo that does not allow pets...but I may still try to bring the dog to th USA and try to find a poddle rescue or adoption group to find it a home.

My question: how hard is it to bring a dog into the USA? Costs? Quarantine? Advice?

Thanks.

Dogs

- Dogs must be free of evidence of diseases communicable to humans when possibly examined at the port of entry.

- Valid rabies vaccination certificate (including an expiration date usually up to 3 years from the actual vaccine date and a veterinarian's signature). If no expiration date is specified on the certificate, then the certificate is acceptable if the date of the vaccination is not more than 12 months before the date of arrival. The certificate must show that the dog had the rabies vaccine at least 30 days prior to entry.

There are millions of dogs and cats in re-homing centres throughout the USA. Many will be euthanized because no one wants them. By bringing the dog here you could be condemning it to an early death and this, after a long plane journey too, seems a little unfair to me.

I'd suggest that you find it a home in your girlfriend's country OR you move to a new home that does take animals.

 The only thing worse than giving a dog to one of those groups in your fiance's home country would be putting it on a plane, dragging it the U.S., and then giving the dog to one of those groups in the US!

I have this weird feeling that your girlfriend doesn't know that if she brings the dog you plan to get rid of it. To me, if I fell in love with someone with pets, and my building didn't allow it, I'd move. It's asking them to get rid of a part of their family!

Let me know how it goes, because I definitely have to take my dog to the US because she has glaucoma so I wouldn't leave her here :crying: it's one of the things I'm looking forward to because she's on medical treatment for life (she's 5 years old) and I can't find a vet in Argentina to perform the surgery to correct it so she can get off the medication.

With that said...I think you should try your best to keep the dog, or place it with a family in your fiancée's home country or in the US, not a shelter

Caro,

Oh my god Caro! Your dog is BEAUTIFUL! Reminds me of a dog I see going around the lake here, except she has one green eye and one blue eye. GORGEOUS. You really can't find a vet to fix your dog's glaucoma? But you can in the US? (Just curious)

Yeeaahh, Anya is the greatest, she's not only pretty but she has the greatest personality too, everyone falls in love with the on the spot :D

The only Vet I found here that would consider operating on her is professor of opthalmology at the university, and it would be her first time because it's not a very common surgery and the procedure is still experimental...but I want someone with experience ;) and I know in the US they have more experience with it.

I'll try my best to see if I can get an airline that would let her fly on the cabin (in a pet carrier of course, but just somewhere I can see her), since stress can make her eye pressure raise and you have to act fast...poor sweety.

Weird, I was just thinking about all this when I saw this thread, what a coincidence.

Ah, I hope you are able to have her in the cabin with you.

PS I hope I didn't come across as sounding like I was criticizing you, but I feel like somehow it sorta did; I was actually just surprised that the US and Argentina would have different ways of doing vet care. I'm glad you are coming here then so a US vet can take care of your dog!

Caro,

Anya IS gorgous! Just FYI, my fiance' is bringing his dog to the US in 2 weeks. It will be a bit more than $2000 becuase he is a big dog (about 100 lbs). However, if he was 2 sizes smaller (crate sizes), it would've only been $150 (because they are put in a different place on the plane once they reach a certain size)!?! I am pretty sure they will not allow the dog to ride in the cabin with you~ but I understand your concern and you should definately check into it further. Also, we found out that dogs cannot fly once it reaches 85 degrees F in either the point of departure or the destination. Obi (Jake's dog) had to get 2 rabies jabs and a test to check the titre. He will also have to get a health check no longer than 10 days before he flies. Very spendy in the end but totally worth it to us! Hope you get to bring your dog home with you. Good luck.

LOL Alex I know you were not criticizing, I would never think that of you ;) no explanation needed

but what's true is true, and the US is better at this than Argentina ( and I should know because I'm a vet student!)

Hey that's great info! Anya weighs 45 pounds, so hopefully it won't be $2000!! I read that they only let dogs fly in the cabin on international flights when they are sight seeing dogs, at least that's the rule for AA...so it's a long shot, I'll still try my best though, just because of her medical condition...otherwise I'll be one cranky, worried, annoying passenger

That's true for some shelters, but many are moving away from that sort of system and making people reserve spots in shelters instead, and they have foster programs to alleviate overcrowding and to facilitate socialization.
