My one time as a part owner in a business did not last long. It was an English pub style bar. We did pretty well, and the business itself still does, but just not my thing. The one thing I did learn though is it's pretty stupid to knowingly antagonize paying customers if you want to keep them. Sure they are old, and sure they know it, but don't write it on their bill where they can see it.

They could put fat older white guy on mine and be factually correct, doesn't mean I would not be offended

The easiest thing to do in a restaurant is use “table 1”, “table 2” or whatever to indicate where the customers are sitting. Physical descriptions are risky. You never know what will rub people the wrong way. Granted, People  may be too sensitive nowadays, but if you need those sensitive people to keep coming back, it makes no sense to risk offending them over something so unneccessary.

Me too, but would not offend me in the least.

So I work in retail, in a shop where we have regulars. And while we have gotten to know these people by their real names, we also have nicknames for them we use behind their backs, like "Sour Milk" and "Too Many Cats" and "Gropey McGroperson." The last one was bestowed when this guy grabbed my shoulder to "steady himself" as he tried to reach something off a shelf, and oopsaccidentallyonpurpose touched my chest. 😠 I live in fear that one of us is going to slip up one day and call them by their nickname to their face!

You should call gropey out, if you're sure it was on purpose, he sexually assaulted you, harmless old men are rarely harmless.but if he does it to you, he would do it to a busty 14 year old equally as easy.

I know I should -- he's a good customer otherwise, which makes me hesitant to make an issue of it. And he's not an old man! I think he is actually younger than me (mid 20s or so, I think he's a grad student). But next time if it happens, I will definitely say something. :) I am giving him the benefit of the doubt this time, but the second time (if it happens), nope.

I'll take it a step further and suggest you document it on paper with your HR department.  Date, time, how you felt, etc.  Make a paper trail with your HR department, otherwise the next time it happens will be the first time it happens.

And I commend you for giving him the benefit of a doubt that the first time was an accident.  May well have been.  Too many jump at the slightest implication of impropriety. Still, protect yourself by filing a report.

We have three staff members, including me, and the owner who is rarely in, so my manager is HR, I guess. He knows what happened, and is 100% in my corner on this one. He wanted to take it up with Mr. McGroperson himself when it happened, but I said we should just let it go. GMcG is creepy but just socially awkward. I think he needs to have more experience speaking with women, personally. I can't lie -- I thought, what if he's one of those incels and I call him out and he shoots up the place?

Just kidding. I am just monitoring the situation. :)
