Sorta cool, you get great views from the bay and I think the tour lasted about 1 hour on the island and the slow boat ride there and back.

I've been there. It's very neat. It's been a long time since I've been, but it was a memorable experience.

I went there about 5 years ago. It was an interesting tour. They have recorders you could rent that would walk you through the place and tell you about each area. There were also a couple of guys that had actually done time there and were available to discuss their experiences. I don't remember the cost but thought it was worth the money and wait.

I enjoyed seeing it. When I went I was on a guided tour by park guides and they did a really good job...even letting everyone who wanted to, be closed in a solitary confinement cell for a few seconds to see what all blackness was like. Just a few seconds was spooky...couldn't imagine being tossed in for any length of time. Cool also to see where famous criminals (like Birdman of Alcatraz) spent their time and also the view back to the bay was nice to see. I don't know if they do guided tours anymore, but because you could ask questions, I'd recommend that over a recorded tour. But take the recorded, if that's all they have.

yes, do get the self tour audio tour. It is well worth it cause on the audio they had actural immateds talking about life there and what it was like. It is very well worth it.

nope, it says everywhere that the tickets are non-refundable

Now, I am just trying to find a hotel/motel that is under 100 bucks, that is half decent and close to the Fisherman's Wharf

if you expand your hotel search to include oakland, you may find something in your price range. just make sure it is a good hotel.
