And so we adopted 2 kittens

After reading the other thread last week about cat adoption I found a shelter around here and we went saturday. At first my husband was reluctant to get a cat because he is mostly a dog person, but finally he was the one to fall in love with a kitten and then he felt bad because he wanted to be selfish about the cat and really have it as his. Since the adoption of a cat was for me in the first place, we got 2 kittens, and I decided to go with the sister. So we have the little brother and sister thing going on and they are adorable. She is the crazy one and he is the couch potato. They are 8 weeks old and they look like fluffy little teddy bears!

So here's Diesel, his boy (all black) and Molly, my girl (Black and white) Enjoy!

Oh, while we have a cat thread going, has anyone ever used Soft Claws before? Our 14 week old kitten is pretty good about not scratching the furniture, but I am having a bit of difficulty getting him not to claw the carpet. He loves water so spraying him does not deter him. He stops when I say no, but as soon as my back is turned, he is right back at it. He also has 2 scratching posts that he does use and enjoy, but for some reason he loves carpets and rugs.

A friend has had great luck with her cat using Soft Claws, but I was wondering if any of you with kittens had tried them. They just look like they could be hard to put on. Fortunately Calvin is good with me trimming his claws, though the last time I did it I cut into the quick of one of them and he bled a bit :o Even then he just sorta winced and continued letting me finish the rest of the paw. But I felt like a horrible mother!

Never tried soft claws but considering it...

I have another kitten question (sorry OP!) My kitten (4.5 months) has this sort of weird habit where any time I sit down or lie down he crawls to my neck and does his "vampire kitten" routine, where he licks my neck and alternately flexes each paw with claws out (so it's not quite kneading) and scratches me. I can't sleep with the door open anymore because of his random vampire kitten attacks all night. I don't want to make him think it's bad to give affection, but I can't get him to take affection in any other way. He has to be purring and licking my neck. Eeww

 Calvin does a similar thing with me Alex! Thankfully no claws are involved, but he just loves to lick my face and neck when I am trying to sleep. All while purring up a storm - which is enough to wake me up without the licking! I had another kitten years ago that did the same thing and eventually grew out of it so I am hoping Calvin will too. Maybe it's a male kitten thing since my female didn't? I dunno. But if anyone has any thoughts I am all ears too!

OP... very cute babies! Please do have them spayed/neutered at 6 months (you don't want incest, do you?? )

Alexandra... it sounds like your kitten is nursing on your neck! He won't let you pet him? I'd try petting him while he's eating until he gets used to it.

Soft Claws sounds much more humane than declawing. Declawing is actually cutting the cat's "fingers" off at the last knuckle. Brutal and painful, not to mention that they can't defend themselves properly after that. I worked for years at an animal hospital and assisting with that surgery was the WORST. The vet's reasoning was that it was better have the cat declawed and have a home, than not declawed and euthanized for destructive behaviour.

Our cats will happily use one of those corrugated cardboard scratching blocks whenever they have the urge.

Best wishes to all fellow cat people...

Maya :luv:

Many thanks to the Visajourney community for all the help!
