I’m hearing you, it is a very nerve racking.. personally, I’ve never had any ambitions toward living in the states and to be honest after living / visiting numerous countries and travelling to the states to visit hubby several times, I still prefer the beautiful coastal living and lifestyle of my own country over that of New Orleans (except the food, omg Cajun food is so good)

One thing I can say with 100% honesty during my interview, is that I only want a visa because I want to be with hubby, heck they can hook me up to a lie detector if they like 😂... if it wasn’t for my hubby loving his job and for the significantly more expensive/time consuming Aussie immigration process, I’d of had hubby move to me for sure...

in saying this, the only thing we can truely do is love our partners and take each new challenge as it comes and try make the best of all opportunities.. at the end of the day, home is where the heart is.. and that’s with hubby... if that’s in America, so be it..

Never understood how people could think you want to manipulate others for a green card when you're from a first world country like that but then again, my country has free healthcare and I'm leaving it to go live somewhere that it costs 30k to have a baby.

I guess that’s where the whole high fraud / risk country bit comes into play 🤷‍♀️ Our health care system is ranked second in the world, right behind you guys. The news feeds on the American system worries me (not the bill, but stories of people getting massive bills or dying outside hospitals etc if no coverage) thankfully my husband has a good policy that I’ll be attached too, but still, the expense of it is like HOW MUCH 😱 what it costs him/his employer per month pretty much pays for a whole year of private cover here... it’s crazy

What does he pay per month and what state?

It's good to get a realistic idea of what we will pay. I figure the tax difference probably is negligible after paying for healthcare.

Family health care for him and his daughter is around $1200 USD per month (60% subsidised by his employer) with $7k deductibles per year.. he’s in LA..

by comparison the same coverage for my daughter and I in Australia is just over $2200 USD a year... the difference in cost is crazy..

@Rosie91, We have overseas healthcare? Can you tell me how it works and who the provider is. Currently enrolled with Zilveren Kruis, but i doubt they offer this kind of service, thanks! :)

Look at Oom verzekeringen. A colleague of mine just moved there. Same visa as ours. She recommended it and has her health insured there.

That's not bad at all then when you consider the tax savings (depending on the state you live in) compared to countries like Australia and Canada. You'll put a lot more back in your pocket each year BUT I'm sure it's more of a headache to deal with when issues arise.

It's great when you're healthy. Not so great when you fall sick and actually need health care.

Found this article claiming US healthcare is the most expensive in the developed world https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-healthcare-countries-ranked-2019-3:

"According to data from OECD, the US spent $10,209 on healthcare per capita, or per person, in 2017. That's more than any other country in OECD's 36-country consortium, and over $2,000 more than Switzerland, the second-highest spending country."

Another link showing similar data https://www.healthsystemtracker.org/chart-collection/health-spending-u-s-compare-countries/#item-average-wealthy-countries-spend-half-much-per-person-health-u-s-spends

I get tax refunds for insurance too, I think I get around 1200 of the 2200 back.. believe me, our insurance is way cheaper than American insurance..
