I have a question about filing for FAFSA. My mother filed for vawa along with the i485 September 2018 of. She got a RFE and submitted it, and around December they confirmed that they had received it. She then got the prima facie determination on January 16th 2019. So, I'm currently in college and because she has me as a dependent the prima facie also extends to me and my siblings. Around July of this summer she filed the i485 for me because she thought why not and in hopes that I'll get an alien registration number to use when I fill out the FAFSA form. We got the notice that they had received it early August but the problem is that I didn't get an alien registration number of my own. The alien registration number on my i485 notice is the one of my mother's and it has us puzzled. Is this supposed to happen? I haven't had my biometric ls yet because they haven't given us a date but will I get my own ARN after the biometrics then? If not should I use my mom's ARN when filling out the FAFSA since that's the ARN on my own notice?

You are a derivative children (dependent) from the I-360 principal applicant (your Mother)  USCIS cannot adjudicated Form I-485 or assign you an Alien # as derivative applicant until the principal applicant (your mother) I-360 is approve and has been granted lawful permanent resident status. Your solely (I-485) don't have basis ground to adjust status, everything is under your mother Vawa self petition application this is the reason they use the same Alien # for your I-485. You will have to keep using the same ARN# as it shown on the I-360, Prima Facie and your I-485.

So I should be able to fill out the FAFSA using the same ARN# as my mother then?

You should be able because you are under her petition. They may ask for more proof with your name since your are only the dependent of the application not the actual principal applicant.

FAFSA or college personal should help more on checking the requirements and qualifications.

Ok I printed out the 2019-2020 form I need to fill out for my fall 2020 year since I'll be transferring to a new University. Thank you for your input. I'll go ahead and start filping the form out. I'll also inform my mom of the fact that we may need more info😊. I'll also try calling the school
