(i-864) can someone sponsor again after they've sponsored before

I have a close family friend who sponsored for one of my relatives a while back. I was wondering if he can sponsor again for another family member?

So let's say he barely made the poverty guideline cutoff to sponsor my relative (one person), can he now sponsor another family member (a different person)? They are two separate applicants.

Sounds like, no. Because you'd be adding another dependent to account for so the minimum requirement then increases

His household size increases by 1 every time he sponsors somebody, so the minimum income level goes up accordingly (See https://www.uscis.gov/i-864p).

If he is still above the minimum he can qualify as a sponsor. However, the CO or IO still looks at the totality of the circumstances to address the public charge concern. If one was barely above the minimum before, it would be a tough sell to sponsor somebody else.

 

Note that the I-864 for the previous family member sponsored may or may not still be in effect (e.g. if they became a US citizen, or earned 40 quarters of Social Security credits). In which case, they no longer are required to be counted in the household size.

 

He can find a joint sponsor if needed.

i’m wondering why you can’t sponsor your own relatives.
