What kinds of jobs do people do from home/on their laptop from anywhere in the world? I constantly hear about it...and see people on TV looking for houses in some far off country and move there and work from their laptop business. What do they do? And how can I do it too?! :D

I work as a web developer for a small company. The company doesnt really have an office, and everyone works from home. I could move anywhere and still be able to work, but we ussualy have in person meetings every month or so, so that wouldnt work that well.

both my husband & i work from home. I do payroll and some invoicing for a local company and some SOX consulting. Hubby is a high voltage electrical engineer and if he is home (vs on site) he is working on scada database conversions.

we both love the zero commute!

yup! also ensures we stay well within our lease mileage and we also save on auto insurance since its rated pleasure use only. if you are a subcontractor you can even deduct many things from your taxes such as the room you use for conducting business, mileage, etc. its a great deal :)

Me too Jen...I'm rather burned out in education and I NEED a change badly! Been doing special education for over 12 years...*sigh*

There are lots of those type "jobs" online but they're more independant contractor jobs or you have to buy into it to have the privilege of working yet again as an independant contractor. I don't want to have to worry about taxes and such...I would love to work from home for a corporation.

It might necessitate going back to school to learn something new. Before I went into education I worked as a draftsperson for a couple of land surveying firms. Methinks I'll go back and get re-educated in the current technology (Auto-CAD) and see if I can find a way to do drafting from home.

A good friend of mine works from home as a medical transcriptionist.

My husband works from home several days a month and they are talking about making it 100% of the time possibly as early as this summer. He is a computer software architect and programmer.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I'm also rather burnt out on being a slave...er.. I mean chef. I like to be at home, I LOVE to travel, and I'd love the freedom of living anywhere I want. I don't qualify for any of the types of jobs people have mentioned here. :( Maybe its time I go back to school. *putting my thinking cap on

My dad is a civil engineer/draftsman and they do auto-CAD...it's a tough, tough, tough business. He spends half his time out on sites, in meetings with architects/contractors, and works about 60-70 hours a week. Definitely not for the faint of hear

If you want to be independent or work from home there are several things you could try. Some CPAs (accountants) work on their own and have very flexible arrangements though they don't make as much as accountants in a firm. Some firms are so desperate for trained accountants that they'll be pretty flexible on arrangements.

I.T. is a demanding field and entry-level jobs can be scarce if you don't have experience or a degree in comp sci/engineering, or at least some certifications so going back to school would be a must. :(

My reasoning is so that I'll still be able to be at home for our daughter when she gets home from school and when she's off for holidays and the summer. I'd rather not pay for daycare...it's expensive here and I suppose anywhere. So yeah, sounds like we're both gonna have to go to school. Ugh. :)
