If all goes well, my fiance and I should be married and back in Rhode Island at the very beginning of July.

I want to file for AOS ASAP to avoid paying the new fee on July 30th. I've just had my co-sponsor finish the paperwork for the K1 interview and given her a heads up on starting the I864 for the AOS.

Do I have a snow ball's chance in h%ll of getting this stuff sent off in less than a month? Ostensibly, I'd like to have it mailed out in plenty of time to actually arrive before July 30, but I know that it's going to be a race against time.

Will he need to have his SS card in hand before applying for AOS? If so, I'd imagine that my chances are shot.

You can mail it out the day after you get married. We did

My husband arrived 3/18 and we got married on 4/29. Our AOS paperwork was in the mail 5/1 - checks cashed the first week of May.

I worked on the paperwork a bit before he came - but mostly during the time we were preparing for the wedding. It is a lot less than the K1 - and alot of the same work.

I'd "get to know" the documents you'll need, find a civil surgeon in your area, make photocopies of what you have....

But once your fiance is here you'll needs his DS-3025 transferred to the I-693A, his passport pics, his I-94, passport, BC...

But you can start now.

He does not need an SSN to apply for AOS - just his A#.

You do not need a SSN to file for AOS.... you will need to get married within the 90 days and have the certified copy of your Marriage Certificate to file.... all the other paperwork can be done ahead of time.... so as long as you can get married and get the certificate before July 30th and get the Vaccination supplement done by a civil surgeon as that needs to be included with the AOS packet you could beat the fee increase....

Good Luck

Thanks, Bora Bora!

Sounds like we'll be okay. I've still not finished up on what he'll need for the interview, but when I'm procrastinating on that, I've been reading up on AOS. Luckily there are several civil surgeons at the low-income health clinic withing walking distance of my house.

And my mom is my co-sponsor and fairly neurotic, so she can be copying like a demon while I'm off with him at his interview!

I suggest calling the CSs now because some may want to charge for an immigration physical but all you need are his vaccines transfered onto I-693A (A is for the vaccine).

Also, I think it best to take the marriage certificate to the county clerk so you can get the certificate in one day. If you mail it after you get married then you have to wait for it to come back.

That's what we did. The day after we got married we took a trip down there and in ten minutes we had a couple of certified copies in our hands.

(You may need to use them to change your last name too - if you choose to).

I can have this done before we get married, right? I suppose I don't have to wait until after the wedding (I won't need the marriage certificate with my new name for this).

Can someone verify, please?

The only snag with getting the DS-3025 transferred to the I-693A form is finding a civil surgeon who will do it for a reasonable price. $40 is about the best you will find, $80 to $100 is typical. Some civil surgeons will try to gouge you so shop around before getting an appointment. Assuming he just did his medical for the K-1 this is all he will need, some civil surgeons insist they need to do a full exam and want more money for that, but all the civil surgeon is doing is reading the chart done overseas and putting in on the I-693A.

So beyond searching for a decent price, this is a quick and easy step. And you can do it at any time he is in the USA. Before or after the wedding doesn't really matter.

Good luck on your journey!

I've started calling around...one place told me that they would only do a full medical, despite my telling her that he would already have that done. Nope, we won't do it. Does that make sense? Should I try to talk to someone else there? I found another place that will do it for $80.

Sigh....
