Ahhh...welcome to the USA where anyone with a pulse can get a mortgage that they can't afford unless they have 3 jobs....therefore never allowing themselves the time to be in the wonderful house that they will have to refinance many times until they finally pay off their mortgage just before they drop......I'm only saying that because we just bought a condo here in the TC....so I will be a slave to my mortgage now until I'm about 90.......but hey....better than paying rent.

Which goes back to the original issue of mortgage slaves -- I think investing in property in Britain (or many parts of the US) right now is crazy unless you plan to live there for a long time. The market is going down. OTOH, the stock market has been very robust.

A friend of mine who is now a financial advisor considers mutual funds a good, safe, "first step" for the newbie investor. Less risk than individual stocks, less upside potential as well.
