Is every place in the USA that isn't NY, SF, or LA considered the 'boondocks' then?

Where do I say this?

But yes, I would severely limit my career prospects in the work that I do if I didn't live in New York or LA

Fact - NO part of this country offers anything near the career prospects that NYC and LA do.

Fact - No part of this country has the ridiculous living costs that NYC and LA do, except SF. What difference does it make if I'm making $200k a year if all I can afford is a shack and I'm commuting an hour to work and an hour back? To me, the quality of life is just no good in those places. I'd have to give up too much of what *I* think is valuable.

i can agree 100% with that, however there are always trade-offs between career and family. my income to expenses ratio in dfw would far outway the career advantages in a place like LA or NY.

I agree. When you compare the cost of living in DFW vs NYC, the salary increase you get by going to NYC in no way covers the difference in the cost of living.

When I worked for marchFIRST, they had kicked around the idea of transferring several of us working on the FAO Schwarz project to the NYC office. We did the math and figured that they would have to multiply our salaries 5x instead of the 3x that they were offering, and that was industry standard in NYC. In some ways, it would have been a pay cut.

I understand completely. We all have different priorities. Mine isn't "career", its maintaining as much income continuity as possible. I figure I have a good shot of that here.

LOL, living in Manhattan on an IT salary is crazy talk. You'd end up commuting an hour by train. It's a big change in lifestyle, doesn't work for everyone.

I work in film - yes there are some jobs in other parts of the country, but nothing with any real career progression. One day, I will give up showbiz life to move to the country, but until then I will live in LA.

I don't really see living here as much of a trade off compared to other big cities except for the cost of property. The positives outweigh that for the time being.

But I will move on in time.

Who the hell said 'Manhattan'? You did. I didn't.

It is not a change in lifestyle I'd be willing to make. I had a good life in Austin. I made more money than I, as a single 24-25 year-old woman, knew what to do with. I had an 800 sq ft apartment all to myself. I had a brand-new car. Shopping was a recreational activity. Transferring to NYC to me would have been a step down, lifestyle-wise.

Sounds like you lack imagination ;)

Maybe I'm just not as materialistic as you are.

You can spend money on material things... or you can engage in charity. The opportunities are limitless.

Don't know what to do with all that money? Lack of imagination, plain and simple. The possibilities are infinite, both materialistic and charitable.

I'm tired of your insults. Have a nice life.
