i have a love/hate relationship with nyc. there really is no city like it..and imho- no city better in america! but its not for people who can't handle stress, crowds, or diversity well.... the nightlife, culture, diversity, activities, architecture, etc can't be beat. but i can definitely understand why some people would hate it. when i lived in london and walked down any high street during a busy season i wanted to punch and shove people i was so stressed and annoyed!

when i want to buy things and i have to put things back because i would never be able to carry it home...that makes me miss california. life is definitely much more convienient outside of nyc!

That's pretty much what would do it for me. The cost of living is obscene, I get fed up with crowds...I can't stand it when people brush up against me in public...and I don't like the noise. London or Paris is fine for a couple of days, but I find it hard to cope with the stress and noise and stink and after a couple of days I'm very eager to leave.

Dallas is a big city but it's nothing like New York in terms of its layout. I don't like going to the theater, to musicals, concerts, or plays, and I don't like nightclubs so New York would be wasted on me. Plus, I think Dallas is plenty diverse.

I've not seen anyone insult Texas particularly in this thread, no more than anyone else has insulted any other part of the USA. So, I think we can all take a deep breath and throw some stones at my purple hat. :P

Yikes...talk about exurbia! I've never even heard of some of those places.

try bell station, its in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district you were asking about!

What's the highway access like though? North of 183 in that area there doesn't seem to be much in the way of east/west or north/south highways. One great thing about west Irving was the highway access; I had easy access to 635, 183, 360, 35, and 114. It was so easy getting everywhere; I worked at the Infomart for a while when I lived out there and my commute was a breeze even though the Infomart is a stone's throw from downtown.

Where we buy a house is going to be largely dictated by where we find work. If we both end up working in the telcom corridor or Plano, Hurst is definitely out of the question!

I find that the only cities I would or could live are those with silly real estate prices. I am ready for that housing bubble to burst.

me too. ask me where i want to live and its always expensive. believe me, i'd much rather live somewhere i could get a huge house for $100,000 and 5 acres too! its that my interests keep me liking the expensive cities like NY, LA, and SF. :(

yea i know the feeling, my house purchase was entirely dictated by the location. i;m just 5 blocks from work. plano would be a terrible commute. but ft.worth and los colinas isn't too bad. you'd be surprised at the amount tech business in the HEB area. maybe you can message me the kind of work you are looking for and i'll see whats in the area.

If I get the job that Google wants me to interview for then I'd be working from home; the job itself is actually in northern California.

My husband works in very esoteric computer things...in the past few years he has worked mainly in grid computing, neural networks, and bioinformatics (mostly facial recognition subroutines).

that and career - there are certain boondocks places I think I might be able to live, but I'd have to change my work (or severely limit career prospects) to do it

That's true for most people. I have colleagues who have recently made the mistake (mistake IMO) of moving out to Pennsylvania while keeping their current jobs. Traded in a <=30 minute commute for a 2-2.5 hour commute; a small townhouse/condo/falling apart cape cod for a SFH in a good neighborhood; a crummy school district for a good one; an exorbitant property tax bill for a less exorbitant tax bill. I don't know if I'd make the choice... the 2 hour (one-way) commute is a deal breaker for me.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Is every place in the USA that isn't NY, SF, or LA considered the 'boondocks' then?

Hell, I wouldn't want to be in the car more than 20 minutes on my way to work.

Cool, thanks! Apparently Southwest Airlines are looking to hire more techies. I'll definitely be sending my resume to them, I'm encouraging hubby to do the same. My cousin is a veep there but he's in flight ops so we're on our own there; he can't pull strings for us. He probably wouldn't anyway. :crying:
