E3(D) and EAD

Hi all, a bit of background:

I arrived in newyork this week on an E3(D) Visa; my wife (australian) arrived 2 months ago on her E3, and was able to work immediately, while I waited at home in the UK for marriage certificates and the consulate appointment for my Visa. I am now sending off my i765 and supporting documents to obtain an EAD, which I understand has a 3 month processing time, which is closer to 4-6 months if others experiences are true. I'm 99% sure on the answers to the 2 questions below but wanted to make sure:

1. Do all EAD apps (i765) need to be sent via mail to the appropriate addresses, rather than in person?

2. The supporting docs, they ask for copies of i94 and passport, but "marriage certificate" rather than copies of marriage certificate. I'm assuming they mean the original copy?

Obviously i cant work during this time, and it's long time to go without income, or a "purpose" so to speak, so was looking for advice on what my options are:

1. Am I able to engage in volunteer work?

2. Am I able to engage in unpaid internships?

3. Am I able to pursue any education?

4. Am I able to leave the country? (I.e. work at home in the UK?)

5. How have other people passed the time without going crazy from nothing to do or money to spend!!!

Thanks in advance,

Ben

You mail in your EAD application and there are limited options for work, think soup kitchens, jobs or internships which would never pay. Education is a possibility as well.

E3 is a temp work visa, you are a dependent, you can both come and go.
