Now here is something I was wondering about. My fiance and her children had their medical and their biometrics completed prior to their interview! Will they have to get new biometrics when they arrive here?

They may need to give their biometrics during the AOS process. Your not very definitive answer(s) may be found in the Form I-485 instructions, pages 5, 14 and 15 : https://www.uscis.gov/i-485

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)

You don't have to pay for another medical if you already had a medical overseas within a year of filing for AOS. As a K-1 you had an overseas medical.

As a K-1 you only pay for the i-485 and biometrics. A total of $1225 for a non-senior adult person.

As others already said, the AP and EAD are for free. There's no reason not to file for them when you file for AOS.

And yes, AOS is like a walk in the park compared to the i-129f and K-1.

Or ROC. 😅

Enjoy getting your few documents that are needed for AOS together. I'm serious.

You can send all 3 forms together (I-485 packet (meaning the I-864 and such too), I-131, and I-765). The only fee would be the fee for the I-485 ($1225 total for most cases). The other forms have no added fee.

How about Social Security, should that be sent to them while the other forms are processing?   I need a Social to add her to my bank account and medical insurance and to put her as my beneficiary, all need a Social Security number.

Thanks so much you guys and gals for your help.

Unless you get the ssn before the expiry of the 194. (90 days from entry on K1) you won’t be able  to get it until you have received the EAD.... for this reason it’s strongly recommended to apply for the ssn very soon after arriving , and before getting married.

Ah I gotcha should I put her as "legal alien not allowed to work?"  what reason do i give when they ask why we need a number.  It says if if you chose "legal alien not allowed to work or other, you must provide a  document from a us federal, state or local agency that explains why you need a social security number that you meet all the requirements for the government benefit,.

Until the EAD comes I don’t think you will be successful in getting a SSN.. she is technically in a period of authorised stay .. which I think is different to legal alien not authorised to work .. could be wrong ...

Legal alien allowed to work. She needs work authorization (as will be noted on her SS card), but the category for K-1 is legal alien allowed to work.

Edit: Yes, this needs to be with at least 2 weeks of legal status (noted on her I-94) left. If that has passed, the. She needs the EAD.

We have about two months remaining, I'll see if we can send out for one.    Thanks

@Tidus992

you should not need her ssn in order to add her to your bank account , your health insurance or list her as a beneficiary.. but unfortunately many banks , HR departments, employers etc are unaware of this and may insist on one

We needed I94 and passport.  They didn't require BC.

Is there an advantage to getting it before marriage?

We didn’t go through fiancé visa so my knowledge is not first hand .. but I understand that, because the application for the ssn using a K1 generated I94 is that it will only be issued in the unmarried name.

Also, as it can sometimes take 4-6 weeks for the ID checking with DHS, getting the application in ASAP will give the best chance for success within the narrow timeframe .

Others will hopefully add their direct knowledge ..

ah, ok, thanks.  She is keeping her maiden name, so for us it's not an issue.   On the timing, we walked into the office and like so many others, they informed us that "additional checking" was required.  According to the SAVE casecheck site (below), they rec'd our case from SS on the same day she applied, and returned it to them the following day.  Status now shows actions are back with SS.  So I expect that we'll see that card in a matter of weeks.   Just for info, she applied for the SSN 14 days after arrival.
