K-1 Marriage in Massachusetts

Hi there,

Was just wondering if anyone had gone through the K1 experience in MA? As I understand it, it's a fairly unique state in that both parties need a SSN in order to get issued a marriage license. I'm not too well versed in the process of getting a SSN, but I know it takes roughly two weeks to show up on their database, then likely another two weeks (?) to get issued the card. I'm worried this will cause delays in the marriage and AOS filing within the 90 day period.

Can anyone who got their SSN before getting married on their K1 share their experience/timeline please? Much appreciated!

PS: If anyone is well-versed with the K-1 process in Massachusetts I'd love to hear your experience and any tips you gathered.

Not familiar with marriage in Massachusetts but regarding SSN, the sooner, the better.

If when requesting the number, the beneficiary does not appear in the SAVE database, they'll proceed to manual verification, which could take quite a while.

You can check the status of it, here:

Good luck.

I went to the SS office roughly after 5 days. Wanted to apply before getting married. Gladly had no issues. So maybe you don't need to wait two whole weeks to be in the system.

All states require the partners' SSNs before they issue a marriage license.  That's federally mandated, supposedly to make it easier to enforce child support.  However, if you don't have a SSN — for example because you're not a U.S. resident — you can still marry, even in MA:

Wow, I don't know how I missed that.. I was looking at the State's website and they didn't clarify that they made exceptions to the SSN requirement. Thanks so much for this, puts my mind to ease a bit about having plenty more time to get the admin out the way.

Just an FYI:  With the new system with CBP/I-94, everything is electronic so the 2 week wait is not necessary anymore.

I am from MA...he got here Jun 8.  We applied for SSN on June 14 (less than a week) and it came in the mail no problems end of June.  Plenty of time to then go apply for a marriage license (3 day waiting period) and to get married.
