SO it is true

Though possible would you risk months of separation?  A cruise to and from Mexico requires some sort of re-entry process.

What if?

I wouldn’t advise this without AP, not outside the country and back.

How is a state ID "the appropriate documentation based on the status you are seeking in the U.S. for any type of cruise, closedloop or not" to travel and re-enter the US?

I don't know, I just know what works to use for me and my "Travel Partner"

2011 went out of Galveston to Mexico and some other small country, Wife couldn't find Greencard/Passport, I said screw it grab your DL and lets go since I used that to come and go on cruise, took the cruise had no issue getting back into USA.

Fast forward to last Christmas with new updated wife, All her greencard and extension letter was expired, did have the famous I-551 stamp. We cruised out of Miami to DR and Turks and Caicos, When we came back I said see if you show just your DL, came to ramp got off ship had a few lines we showed DL's and came back to the USA,  My wife did have all her correct paperwork on this trip.

What if We Leave the United States Without Getting Advance Parole?

As a general rule, if you leave the U.S. while your application for adjustment of status is pending, USCIS considers your application abandoned. You will not be able to reenter the U.S.

Further, you will lose any of the fees you’ve already paid to the USCIS.

Example: Horacio and his alien fiancé Abril win a contest for a honeymoon cruise to the Bahamas. The free cruise is only available for one week, and it is before Abril is eligible for adjustment of status or Advance Parole. They decide to go on the cruise and leave the United States without getting Advanced Parole for Abril beforehand. Upon return to the United States, Abril is not admitted to reenter.

I’m going on a cruise, do I need advance parole?

Maybe - it depends on where you are going on your cruise.  As discussed in question one above, if you are traveling directly between two parts of the United States (e.g., between Florida and Puerto Rico), an advance parole will not be needed.  If you will be traveling to other countries or non-U.S. territories, advance parole would be necessary.

hahah...ok ok...She's not going. Point made! 😂

Should've asked this question 3 months ago but yet again I seem to always be  "a day late, and a dollar short"

Been there.  Often feels that way during this process.

It might be awhile before AOS is approved.  I believe you can fee-free file for AP which will allow you guys a little flexibility for travel.  I believe you send the AOS receipt notice to get the fee waived.

We just, yesterday,  went to her Biometrics appointment for her green card and employment authorization card so we are fairly early in the AOS process....was hoping she could at least go with me as long as she stayed on the ship. Thank you all for the responses!

Did you not apply for AP?

Not for the AP...mixture of both of not knowing we needed it and in the excitement of her getting here and everything that follows forgot about the company cruise coming up. So no we didnt file for one

I've got to agree with this, we went through immigration when we returned from our cruise even though passport was not required

I also went through immigration even though I haven’t left the ship, and passport was required. They even stamped it. Miami to Mexico.

Yes, it is true, has been that way since 1988 or something. It's just the southern ports, all of Florida pretty much, Galveston Texas, Georgia, etc. Basically any Cruise that does the carribian or Bahamas, etc. But Long Beach, CA passport required, Seattle, WA , passport required, San Francisco, CA passport required. I was just on a cruise down there a few months ago and got screwed out of my Cuba port of call because of the trade injunctions. No big deal, I've been to Cuba a few times, and they gave me almost a 400 dollar cruise credit, that made my 4 day out of Long Beach CA only 156 bucks for the wife and I. Here's the link to the info, looks like LPRs are good.

Not sure if it's worth it at this point since you've already completed Biometrics etc, but you can still send the AP application and a copy of your AOS and EAD NOA1s and it will be processed without an additional fee. So when she gets her combo card, AP is included.

Edit: There's more to include (like copies of the beneficiary's passport bio page, copies of the K1 visa and stamp, copy of Biometrics paperwork, I 94, 2x passport photos) but I mentioned those two because that's how they will tie it together with your other pending applications.

First off, this site is amazing! This site guided me and my fiance through the K-1 process..She is here in the States now and we have been married since March 13, 2019!

My question is I have a company cruise coming up in October leaving from New Orleans and will go to Mexico..it's only going to be there for the day, but if we do not leave the ship do we need a Travel Document for this? We are also waiting on her Green Card to process, so she doesnt have that yet. My gut is telling me she needs to stay with friends and not chance it but you dont know until you ask!  The trip will only last about 4 days so spending the money for the Travel document fee isnt worth it, especially if she can stay with friends if she cant go.

  Any help is much appreciated!

In your wife's case exit the USA without a green card or AP card don't count on getting back into the USA.   It is that simple

Mind you that if you applied for EAD and decide to apply for AP now, they will of course, be processed separately.

In such case, you wouldn't receive a combo card, but an employment authorization card and a few months later, an advance parole paper document.
