Or a stowaway. How do they know someone did not sneak on ship for a ride to the US?

My bad,  should have said "passengers " , meaning authorized or unauthorized.   :)

YMMV

First off, this site is amazing! This site guided me and my fiance through the K-1 process..She is here in the States now and we have been married since March 13, 2019!

My question is I have a company cruise coming up in October leaving from New Orleans and will go to Mexico..it's only going to be there for the day, but if we do not leave the ship do we need a Travel Document for this? We are also waiting on her Green Card to process, so she doesnt have that yet. My gut is telling me she needs to stay with friends and not chance it but you dont know until you ask!  The trip will only last about 4 days so spending the money for the Travel document fee isnt worth it, especially if she can stay with friends if she cant go.

  Any help is much appreciated!

She should have a travel document (AP) by then?   Did you apply for one with the AOS application?

Either way, if a K1 visa entrant leaves the US before AP approval they can’t re-enter.  I would advise she stay under US airspace until AP approval.

If your wife gets on that ship without AP, then she will not be permitted back into the US.  She will have abandoned her AOS. She will need to apply for a spousal visa which will take 12-18 months.

The ship will dock at a foreign port.  That's within the territorial waters of another country.  Staying on the ship is irrelevant.  She has already left the US.

Don't do it.

What money?  It is fee waived with the i485,  it's more about the amont time it will take to get

Not true. As soon as you are 11 miles offshore, you have left the United States and are in international Waters. I have taken cruises out of every port in the US that carnival Cruise leaves out of. From Seattle to Miami and everything in between. On every Cruise whether you leave the ship or not you have to come thru customs on your way back into the US. So you will be inspected by CBP. There is a western hemisphere travel initiative ( I think is what you are thinking about) that allows US citizens the ability to travel from some of our southern Cruise ports without a passport, just a state issued ID. But this is only available to US citizens and maybe LPRs, but I haven't checked in a while. My next Cruise is in January out of Long Beach CA. But I've got a bunch of international travel before the end of the year scheduled, or I love cruises. This will be my new wife's first time, and I hope she likes it, or it's divorce time...  LOL, not really.

I have been on two cruises lately and only used DL.

SO it is true

I really appreciate all the replies and you guys have backed up my initial feelings that she doesnt need to go...As far as staying home alone, she's an adult and can handle it but I would feel more comfortable having her stay with a friend or my parents while I'm gone for 4 days. Also, didnt know you could file for travel documents free of charge if sent up with the initial AOS packet and also didnt know you needed them. We are learning as we go as we are filing everything ourselves. This is has been the only hiccup in our process which isnt really an issue. It's been a very smooth process and looking forward to continuing the ride all the way to citizenship.

  Thanks again, everyone!!

Call the cruise line also and confirm everything, they have seen it all when it comes to what you need and don't need.

From the link you provided.

"If you are not a U.S. citizen or a U.S. LPR, you will need a passport and/or the appropriate documentation based on the status you are seeking in the U.S. for any type of cruise, closedloop or not."

A K-1 would need AP.

Your 1st post that no passport, no green card or AP for a cruise is completely wrong.  An American driver's license is not enough for a K-1.  She is neither a US citizen or a green card holder, so different rule for her.

May of had passports as well.  let me rephrase then only need a passport and state ID

No passort needed and no greencard or AP for a cruise.  She can get off the ship as she pleases.

The cruise you are on is considered a closed loop cruise.  If she has Alabama Driver Licenses or Alabama  ID she can use that.

Also why would an Alabama ID come into play? The cruise leaves from New Orleans, which is in Louisiana, not Alabama...

How is a state ID "the appropriate documentation based on the status you are seeking in the U.S. for any type of cruise, closedloop or not" to travel and re-enter the US?
