Hi,
My wife (Chinese) entered 5/08 and we were married 6/26. We went to the SSA today and they said they couldn't verify my wife's I-94 to give her a social security card. Is this because we were already married? Who should I call to verify everything is ok? Her I-94 is valid until 8/05. If we can't get a social security card this way, when is the earliest time we can? I ask because we are adding her to my healthcare plan.
Thank you!

If attempts to get her SSN fail, I would go to my HR department and request they either add her without a SSN (it's not required by law) or they assign her a client number to put her in the system.

SSA rarely knows how to process K1 SSN applications. Due to that fact you should never apply for an SSN in the married name. You should always apply in the maiden name. Go to a different office and shut up about being married and apply in the maiden name only.

Way back when.... it took the CBP ~ 6 weeks to get my wife's data entered into their SAVE database. That is the database that SSA was referencing to find her. She kept her maiden name. Back then, it was with the old paper P-94 system. It seems that they would band batches of the paper P-94s together and ship them off to somewhere like East Timor, where the data would be hand entered into the SAVE database.

It disheartening, though not surprising, that the vaunted electronic P-94 doesn't seem to be all that it is cracked up to be.

The uses of the SSN is so pervasive. I also contacted my company's HR dept. and  had her added for my health insurance plan.

Agree.....try another SSA office...

Good luck on your immigration journey.
