My two cents on ways that I've lost darn nearly 30 since January:

Stay under 100 carbs per day, and the carbs that are consumed are entirely complex carbs.

No carbonated beverages at all. (not even diet Cokes)

5 or 6 very small meals every day. A meal consists of yogurt and an orange. Turkey (2oz) and broccoli. (1/2 cup). It keeps you full, especially when you drink water in between. It's also the best way to kick-start your metabolism.

Do not ever skip a meal. If you don't eat smaller meals, and just eat three larger ones, don't skip one. Our bodies tend to go into a mini "starvation" mode and start looking for ways to store fat.

Minimum 10,000 steps every day on the pedometer, 60% of these from exercise that gets me to my target heart rate. Every day this week, I've done at least 15,000 steps!

Never go grocery shopping when you're hungry, or close to meal time, and never take a hungry person with you.

And I must disagree somewhat with Steven, I've proven for myself that you do have to count calories. There is a number of calories that your body needs to MAINTAIN that weight. If you dip under that number of calories, you will lose, especially if you're active. I've proven that theory over and over. And if that guy (dr?) was on an informercial and not the nightly news telling of his opinions, is there a slight chance he's a quack?

And to those who don't want to swim because of vanity reasons...get thee to a YMCA! That's where I go, and I'm so glad that everyone there isn't a 17 year old size 2!! I don't have to be self-conscious at all, because some people there are bigger than me!!

Hey everyone,

How about a daily diary of everything we ate for the day - published here in this thread? This will force us to really look at what we're eating and let others give suggestions or tips. :star:

For example:

This morning I had:

16oz bottle of iced tea sweetened with sugar

slice of banana bread

several hands full of roasted and salted sunflower seeds

I do that every day here.

http://www.calorie-count.com/users/kisschick1976

helps me keep track and I can see just how much protein I am getting as opposed to carbs. I try to keep the carbs under 100, doesn't always happen. I'm supposed to be eating around 1450 calories for my age, height and activity level but there are days that I just can't do it. I try to keep that over 1000 at least.

I don't agree with the low carb idea for losing weight (Atkins) - excess intake of protein is really hard on your liver and you'll lose a lot of energy if you're not eating enough carbs. Just switching to whole grains and green leafy vegetables (complex carbs) actually triggers the metabolism to assimilate food a lot better.

What I'm doing isn't like atkins at all. when I started counting my calories I was eating about 250-300 in carbs a day sometimes more. that's not good. Atkins only allows you to have I think 20 a day (or is it a week?) I'm not seeing going over 100 a day a failure it's just a personal guideline. My increase in protein is also because I do a little strength training. The body can only process 3 oz of protein at a time so it's not like I'm having a 72oz steak at every meal. What I am doing is obviously working for me and if my dr says I'm in good health then :D

Something else I started doing is taking supplements from Garden of Life. I am not a big fan of veggies and I think (maybe it's a placebo effect for me) it's helping me. Kinda helps detox me. I do know that since I started taking them, I feel 100% better. I can actually wake up in the morning and not feel like I'm dragging.

Count me in…

I had a shock this morning when I stepped on my scale in the bathroom this morning, and I am at 198 lbs. I was on 185 lbs in March, and I know that a lot has gone on, but it’s no excuse to let go completely. I joined a gym yesterday, I have never been the kind to do just weighs and treadmills and that kind of stuff (I find it extremely boring), but this place has zumba classes (kinda like aerobics but to latin music) three times a week and yoga on Mondays, so I thought I’d give it a try. My first class will be tomorrow. The first step is the hardest, so if I make it to that class tomorrow, I know I’m gonna get hooked and I will keep on doing it.

My main problem is that I eat out a lot, because I travel for work, and it’s SO hard to make healthy choices… but hey, no one else is going to do this for me, but my self, so I’ve got to get my act together, and start eating healthier and in controlled portions…

No more Hagen Daaz for me on weeknights!!

I've done a little better this week. My wife has had morning sickness(not throwing up, just feeling crappy) so that has made me not eat as much. Plus I've returned to doing a more around the house, since she can't and walking more at work. I lost a pound this week but I have two graduation parties to go to on Sunday.

edit: I enjoy doing things around the apartment, but my wife is home all day and she usually does that because she likes to, not because I'm lazy. ;)

I'm in too! So far I've lost 55 lbs and I am one lb away from my next goal. I am loosing 10 lbs at a time so that it feels like I am loosing faster. I use Calorie-count.com here's my profile if anyone's interested in adding a friend :) from there you can see my before and after pics (well the after pic was 10 lbs ago ;) )

Mainly what I have done is:

  • I eat 200 calories every 2 hrs seven times a day.
  • I try to eat more protein than carbs.
  • Calorie-count.com helps me keep track of the numbers and even has a toolbar for Firefox with an eat meter that lets you know how many more calories you can have for the day.
  • I don't exercise other than taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further from the store, walk to places when I can, if I forget something upstairs/downstairs I actually go get it  I do get on my stationary bike from time to time but the most fun thing I do is I watch tv sitting on one of those exercise balls. By sitting on the ball without my feet on the floor, it really works your core muscles to keep you balanced.
  • build at least a little muscle, more muscle burns more calories which will burn more fat.
  • I weigh myself every day, for some that may not be a good idea, something else you can do is take measurements and keep track of them in a spread sheet. Measure weekly and compare, especially if you are building muscle since muscle weighs more than fat. If anyone's interested, I wouldn't mind sharing mine.
  • I drink lots of bottled water with crystal light, when I want a treat I grab a Coke Zero.
  • I don't deny myself certain foods, a small candy bar is 200 calories. a hamburger or brisket taco may be between 300-400, if you have 100 calorie snacks before and after (or anywhere else in the day) you are still meeting your caloric intake goal. (for women it's about 1400, men I think is 2200)

I love it, I feel good, my chronic stomach aches have started to subside, I got my period back! (ok maybe that wasn't such a good thing :P) I don't see it as a diet, I have fully changed my eating habits. I have been buying new jeans at the thrift store only because I am hoping that I won't be wearing each size much longer :) I have a feeling I was about a size 18 before and now I am about a 13-14... NO MORE STRETCH PANTS!!!

congratulations!!! and you will meet your goal.

Hey guys!

Just checking in :) I have been at a conference for the past 2 days and not around VJ, so I had a lot of reading to catch up on. Way to go with all these weight loss tips!

I've exercised every day this week, generally eating healthy (except for conference food today - my bad!). Don't know yet about weight loss because I have decided I will only weigh once a week, on Monday mornings.

I'm gonna stay and let reaching this goal settle for a while then make my next goal. which will be to weigh 169.5

This is my before picture weiging in at 236

and this was me at 190 wearing the same outfit
