New York Driving Permit

Hello,

 

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, however I couldn't find an answer for New York State for K1 visa. I came here on a K1 Visa and got married and applied for AOS, my I-94 has expired, am I able to get a driver's permit with my NOA1 and SSN? If yes, what are the pros and cons of applying now compared to once I get my EAD or GC? 

 

I'm looking for any real life experience or useful information. Thank you all!

NY BMW only gave me a three month conditional Drivers License based on the K1 validity. However, during that the EAD Work permit came, so they updated the DL for a year.During that time, the Conditional Green Card arrived (without Interview), so then they gave me a two year DL. During that time I got citizenship and will be going to renew for the full validity Real ID DL.

 

On a separate not, how do Illegals get Drivers licenses? I have no idea

This is exactly what I was thinking. I want to get my license but I knew it would expire after the 90 days so thought I would wait for my GC then I see that undocumented immigrants are allowed to apply for one. I know that they will be issued only a license and cannot use it to apply for a passport or travel with it etc but still I want one! Lol

It seems you need EAD. NOA1 alone doesn’t work. Check the link where you can select what are the acceptable documents.

In the mean time NY just passed issuing DL to undocumented immigrants, so there i guess you can definitely get one.
