Hello, my husband  had his AOS interview on 19 June. It was approved. When we filled out the I 485 paperwork we chose to have US CIS give us the SSN. When we had the interview we forgot to ask about it and they never mailed a Social Security card along with the permanent resident card. I've tried 1800-375-5283  and I can't get a hold of anybody, ever!

Has anyone run into this problem? How do we get the SSN quickly now that we are approved?

They are not issued by USCIS.  It may be requested on the form.   You might get it in the mail.

If you have an EAD go into a Social Security Administration Office.   Otherwise wait until he has the GC

He was issued his "green card" and received it in the mail this week. Apparently it acts as an EAD. But I'm not sure what the EAD number would be?

He should go the local Social Security Administration (SSA) office and apply for a social security card using Form SS-5: https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf They accept walk-ins.

The section you are referring to is on the I-765, not the I-485. Since the I-485 was approved before the I-765 was adjudicated, USCIS did not forward his SSN request to SSA.

His Green Card is an authorization to work, but he still needs a Social Security Card.  He should go to a local Social Security office and request the card.

My husband got his before his adjustment of status of interview, they sent the work authorization and the social days apart. As much as you probably don't want to deal with the social security office, its probably your next step. Good Luck with everything :)

To save some time fill out the SS-5 online, print it out, and take it with you when you  go to the SS office.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)

You applied for an SSN on the i-765, not the i485. So if you did not receive your EAD before you received your green card, your SSN application on the i-765 would automatically cancel. Once you receive your green card you will go into an SSA office and apply for an SSN.

Only the Social Security Administration allocates SSNs......
